The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”
“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple
“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal
“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle
“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

Thorough, convenient, well-organized, and small enough to slip in a large pocket or tuck into a purse, this Mapguide is my new favorite and a must-buy for every trip. You know that awful feeling when lost in a foreign city, disoriented, trying to find the nearest landmark and having to unfold a gigantic map in the middle of the street? Might as well wear a gigantic sign marking yourself, to friend or foe, as the hick tourist! Plus, it's just annoying and half the time the map falls apart at the creases, and you still can't find where the hell you are. Instead, these Mapguides are well-organized, focusing on touristy areas with a separate section for each neighborhood. Tourist landmarks are clearly marked, and in the Berlin guide, we used it constantly to find the nearest subway stops and routes.
There are brief -- very brief -- descriptions of major sights in each section (organized by location). Not great for in-depth info but adequate if you've already done your homework. Also, a few restaurant and lodging recs, but these are better gotten elsewhere. For its purposes, it's the best thing out there and well worth the 9 bucks.
One downside to this book - it doesn't provide suggested itineraries or detailed information about the sites. So I chose to do my research and plan my day ahead of time. But once I was out and about this book was perfect to help me find my intended destinations, decide on impromptu stops, and find a spot to eat.
I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something small and light to carry around with you. The fold out maps are great!
