George VI thought him a "damnable villain" and Neville Chamberlain found him not quite a gentleman, but to the rest of the world Adolf Hitler has come to personify modern evil to such an extent that his biographers have always faced an unenviable task. The two most renowned biographies of Hitler--by Joachim C Fest (Hitler) and by Alan Bullock (Hitler: A Study in Tyranny)--painted a picture of individual tyranny which, in the words of AJP Taylor, left Hitler guilty and every other German innocent. Decades of scholarship on German society under the Nazis now make that verdict unsafe, and so the modern biographer of Hitler must account both for his terrible mindset and his charismatic appeal. In the second and final volume of his mammoth biography of Hitler, covering the climax of Nazi power, the reclamation of German-speaking Europe, and the horrific unfolding of the final solution in Poland and Russia, Ian Kershaw manages to achieve both these tasks. Following on from Hitler: Hubris 1889-1936 the epic Hitler: Nemesis 1936-1945 takes the reader from the adulation and hysteria of Hitler's electoral victory in 1936 to the obsessive and remote "bunker" mentality which enveloped the Fuhrer as Operation Barbarossa (the attack on Russia in 1942) proved the beginning of the end. Chilling yet objective: a definitive work.--Miles Taylor

5.0 von 5 Sternen First Class Read 30. Juni 2010
Von The Lazy Book Reviewer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
A first class read on the man and the times he lived on.

Kershaw's examination of Hitler's character and reasoning, mixed with the detail of political and social life in Germany at the time, spiced with personal accounts from Hitler and other's around him, make for a recipe of top notch reading.

For those of you with even a passing interest of how a man such as Hitler could rise to power, this is the book for you.

A very good précis of this catastrophe is given in the BBC 4 Podcast "In our time" presented by Melvin Bragg. The guests were the author, a fawning ( not preening) Nial Fergusson and a lady academic whose name eludes me.

This work follows part 1 concerning his early life and completes the story. I like the extensive bibliography used demonstrating the huge research done by Mr. Kershaw, thus providing the reader with an excellent intimate and detailed description of this most evil and revolting creature. It does not, however, really reveal how a whole modern and educated nation could believe and blindly follow Hitler's ideas and ultimately be terrorized into obeying faultlessly his most bizarre and brutal instructions. I heartily endorse this work and recommend its acquisition by anyone who wants to try and understand how this monster could influence a mighty nation to undertake his genocide with such pride and willing obedience. Perhaps Goldhagen's book.....'Hitler's willing executioners' has a point regarding the Germans' history and brutality.

This book has already been given glowing reviews, and I can only concur. With this book (and the previous volume), we come closer to understand how such a man managed to gain so much power and why, even if Germany was headed for some form of fascism after the Great Depression, Hitler gave it its specific and terrifying shape. In this volume we see how his limitations finally catch up with him and lead to his downfall.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Biography of Adolf Hitler 22. Juni 2014

The book did a great job of bringing to life a time and place that is no more, thankfully! I knew about some of the details of Hitler's life and deeds but the book explained brilliantly the context of that life and those deeds. It may be trite to say it, but there are lessons to be learnt for our own times.
