4.0 von 5 Sternen I'd Buy a Second Copy as a Gift for a Friend 5. Oktober 2011
Von Arnie Baker - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Italian Racing Bicycles. The People, The Products, the Passion. 40 Historic Brands.

* It's a book of memories. 40 years ago I bought my first Italian bicycle, a Torpado (it was bright yellow). Then a Bottecchia, a Colnago, a De Rosa (red). Masi, Pinarello, and Somec came into my life. the book is not only about frame builders, but other Italian bicycle-industry companies and stories. Cinelli double-toe straps. Universal center-pull brakes. I look at the images and my life on two wheels replays in my mind.

* It's a book of history, with details of some 40 well-known Italian companies. Background I didn't know about when I first bought those bicycles; background that fills in gaps, brings even more warmth and color to the brands and my memories.

* It's a gorgeous coffee table book, with many high-resolution color photographs--where the detail of every tool-stroke comes into relief. Where classic Italian design and style can be appreciated, even by those who don't have a cycling background.

I am happy to add it to my library.

Reviewer's note/disclaimer: The publisher sent me a review copy. I was not paid for this review.
I'd buy a second copy as a gift for a friend.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A trip through history of Great Italian framebuilders and component manufacturers 6. Oktober 2011
Von Dominic Mancello - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The photos are high quality and the paper in the book is thick quality stock. I have been riding bicycles for close to 30 years and have several custom-made bicycles. I especially appreciate lugged steel frames made by master craftsmen such as Peter Weigle and Richard Sachs.

I found this book to offer a rich history of many of the most significant Italian bicycle frame builders and component companies. Each of the 40 manufacturers is profiled to give its origin to current day operations. There are many beautiful photos of older bikes (including champion's bikes) as well as some modern bikes. You will learn about the founders of each company and how it has progressed through history. There is much written about the relationship of each company to champion bicycle racers and specific stages of the great European races. While interesting, I would have also appreciated more information and photos of each companies current bikes/components.

I suppose one can complain that not every significant Italian manufacturer is present in the book but I believe that the 40 profiles gives a good representation of Italian craftsmanship in the bicycle industry from it's beginnings to modern day.

The book is layed out in alphabetical order by company name. At the beginning of each profile is a 'box' with the company name, founder of the company, the year the company started business, address, telephone number and web address. The company name is indexed at the top of each page to quickly find the manufacturer.

Definitely recommended for fans of bespoke bicycles and fans of the great Italian contribution (both historical and modern) to the bicycle industry.

I think they should have included more photos or the classic bikes pre 1985. Too many pictures of new models. If I wat to see the latest cf wonder bike I just need to pick up a mag or jump on the computer.

A very beautiful book, one that will have you drooling over the bicycles. The information is well presented and illustrated and it makes a nice coffee table book. If you're into biking or know someone who is, this is one you'll pour over the pages again and again and it makes a nice gift.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great coffee table book 23. März 2012
Von Cindy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Beautiful book, just like the bikes within. Didn't give 5 stars because the expected brands had more information than I really wanted, and some of the obscure brands (that I really wanted to know more about) had so little information provided they weren't really justified in being included.
