Format: Taschenbuch
Länge: 1:05 Minuten
Weiye Yin is a concept artist with over ten years of experience. He draws a variety of subjects but this book focuses on scene design, creating believable backgrounds that serve as a backdrop for stories in games and films.

The book is split into three parts. First is the introduction to scene design and how it differs from just painting background art. Second part looks at the principles and procedures. Third is a collection of demonstrations that look at how a few scenes are developed, namely Landscape, Environment, Urban Architecture, Atmosphere and Still Life.

It is a good introductory guide to scene design. You get tips on dealing with composition, lighting, colours, adding details, effects, doing drafts and even on dealing with clients.

The step-by-step demonstrations talks in depth about the conceptualization process, the considerations when handling different types of projects. Two of the case studies presents some tips on using 3DS Max for scene designs. Most, if not all, the examples are digital paintings, some with the use of 3D software.

It's more recommended to intermediate and advanced artist who already know the basics of painting and want to apply that knowledge to a different field.

This book is good for setting up a tone and a attitude in a short! But just beware a lot of these kinds of books can't make you good at telling a story that's all in the artist!

Would have liked to have seen more variety of styles, and scenes. On a whole, I wasn;t wow-ed. With that title you expect more.

Would like to echo the negative reviews so far.
I particularly noticed how almost all images showcased inside the book are far too low-res and blotchy for their size - if you're looking for a guide that takes you through the whole process down to the fine rendering, this isn't the book for you.

HASH(0x8fdedd8c) von 5 Sternen Reads more like a portfolio on the artists work, than a study of scene design. 19. März 2012

I approached this book from a 3d artist/concept designer point of view. The book is beautifully packaged and great looking, but thats about where it all ends. If you're looking for something educational, that might help you bounce ideas off of, or improve you as an artists, or even get a better handle on screen design - you wont find it here. In my opinion this book was written by a young artist who jumped the gun too early in their career before they had formulated something substantial to offer other artists. Theres alot of filler - and no real meat and potatoes. Theres alot of pictures that show the artists process going through seveal envieonment illustrations step by step - its always the same process regardless so once you've seen the first one, its just repetitive and offers nothing new. What information there is on his thought process in approaching a design is nothing more than common sense, and what educational insight he offers on artistic principles like perspective and color is very short and not delved into in any degree that would help the reader in any regard. It reads more like an artists portfolio of work, rather than a book on scene design. There isnt anything new here that you wont find in any other book that is much better organized and has more to offer. Id recommend looking at books by james gurney or dvds by gnomon illustrators if you want to learn about what goes into making a successful image/design and skip on this title. It'll be collecting dust on my shelves for years to come no doubt.
