Lady Olympia Wherlocke was brought into play by the desperate request of Lady Agatha Mallam, young sister to Lord Brant, whom Agatha had been trying to contact for weeks. Lord Brant had burnt many bridges and was persona-non-grata with the elite of the ton, after he discovered the perfidy of his mother who kidnapped his betrothed and sold her to a brothel where she then died. So disgusted and bereaved, he had drunk himself into oblivion and became one of the worst rogues around. Because Olympia had the gift of foresight she sensed she must step in to help save Lady Agatha from the plans her vile mother had to sell her to a diseased and obnoxious lord.
After tracking Brant down, and some humorous events and introductions to notable and secondary characters (like a step brother whom Brant never realized he was related to) Lady Olympia brought Brant out of his stupor and advised him what was going on in his home and the vile future his mother was planning to consign to his young sister.
What follows is a marvelously constructed storyline where Olympia helps Lord Brant regain his inheritance and the backbone to finally stand up to and defeat his mother’s nefarious plans for his sister as well as dismantling her sex slave ring. The romance in this was subtle and sensual, adding just the right amount of sensitive emotion to a sinister plot so vile in comparison to decent morality.
Bottom line: IF HE’S TEMPTED is just another prime example of a totally enjoyable and excellent piece of writing using a bit of fantasy that has completely captured my imagination.
I did enjoyed the first three of the series Wherlocke / Vaughn. But with the last two, If He's Dangerous en If He's Tempted I became disappointed and frustrated. Maybe because I am the one of the few readers hoe truly pay attention to details. By every detail about the characters that Ms Howell did not put right, I got more and more annoyed. In both this book and the book If He's Dangerous some of the characters from the others books come back, but the information about then are not always right.
The first two, If He's Wicked and If He's Sinful are put in the year 1788. Olympia makes her first appearance in If He's Sinful, as the youngster sister of Penelope's mother and has said to be 24 years old. I liked her from start, because she is strong and has a sharp wit.
In the third book, If He's Wild, the story of Chloe and Penelope has happened three years back, with make believe that the story of Alethea and Hartley does happen in 1791. In this book, Stephan, the brother van Penelope is 16 years old, Darius and Owen, sons of Argus are 15 years old and 11 years old respectively.
The story in If He's Dangerous happens in the summer of 1790. In that book Olympia presented her self as Baroness of Stryke Hall, a "title gained from one that has been passed down through the female line". Stephan is again 16 years old and both sons of Argus have about the same age, 12 years old. Also is mentioned that Hartley is coping very well with the gift that his en Aletha son already have showed (healing). This could not had take place before 1793, because the baby shows this gift at nine months age, according with Ms Howell has write in 'If He is Wild', in the last chapter.
In If He's Tempted (witch happens at fall of 1790) Olympia introduces herself to Lady Agatha Mallan as the Baroness of Myrtledowns, she is twenty six years old and a widow. Not in one of the other stories is this marriage status of Olympia mentioned. Artemis and Stefan, Penelope' brothers arrives in London to help and are in this story nineteen and seventeen, respectively.
Al that had made me going from book to book to check if I was wrong, making the reading of the If He's Tempted not enjoyable as it was reading the other books.
Besides, I found the interaction between Olympia en Brant not a very romantic one. I missed more action too, and the showing of gifts from the other characters.
I hope Ms Howell will give more attention to details in her next books, specially if they are about the Wherlockes / Vaughn of the Murray. They are by far my favorite personages.
