Kurzbeschreibung

When inquisitive American journalist Joel Stratte-McClure decides to walk around the Mediterranean Sea, we're in for an exhilarating adventure. As a 30 year expatriate in France, he explores the coast, countryside and regional cultures - as well as his own mind - with compulsive vigour. Armed with a copy of Homer's Odyssey, he re-opens this great book for us as he ponders life, divorce, Buddhism, alcoholism, the art of trekking and a vast collection of weird, wicked, wonderful people along the way. This is a trip to get into!

Reviews
"This is the best guide to the Mediterranean since Homer's The Odyssey"
- Princess Beatriz de Orleans Borbón from Spain.

"One of those seductive books that, as you read, slowly insinuates itself into your consciousness and becomes more and more compelling and entrancing."
- Bruce Elder, The Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald.

"'The Idiot and the Odyssey' is such a terrific antidote to the middle age melancholia that if Homer could do a sequel, Odysseus would probably jump ship to join Joel Stratte-McClure's MedTrek instead."
- Craig Unger, Vanity Fair Contributing Editor and author of "The Fall of the House of Bush."

"Described as 'Eat Pray Love' for men, Stratte-McClure's account is entertaining, informative and inspirational."
- Toni Whitman, Booktopia Buzz.

"A dream experience of a lifetime. It's worth every ebullient, blistering step!"
- Tom Moore, Editor-in-Chief, Reader's Digest Australia

3.0 von 5 Sternen Another good travel book with a slight difference 9. Januar 2013
Von Richard Achilles - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Joel Stratte-McClure is a journalist undertaking a walking trip right around the Mediterranean Sea - my favourite place in the world. He certainly has a better writing style than you would expect from many journalists, despite his slightly annoying tendency to pepper every day's adventures with a slight overabundance of contemplative sayings from the world of Oriental philosophy.

If you want to really find out what the coast of the Mediterranean is like, then read this book. I would have given it 4 stars if the trip had been finished - I can only hope that Joel will complete his trip sometime and write the second half of his book. I'll certainly be buying it if he does!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Amazing book by an amazing man. 10. September 2013

The title says it all: Who but an idiot would even consider walking around the Mediterranean Sea? Turns out that this "idiot" is a well-educated, thoughtful adventurer with a sense of humor and wonderful writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his trials and triumphs along his trek, and look forward to the next installment. Wish I were in good enough physical condition to accompany him for a day or two!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Adventure and Redemption 1. Februar 2009
Von Annette Holland - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
All of the glowing reviews are right. Joel Stratte-McClure has written a fascinating travelogue, account of a spiritual pilgrimage, memoir of a mid-life crisis, and informative guide to the Mediterranean Coast. Interwoven with references to the works of Homer, Lao Tsu and Thich Nhat Hahn, the author's observations are clear-eyed, full of wisdom and wit. He's a charming raconteur.

But I found this quixotic "Medtrek" to be something more. To me, it's a tale of redemption. The author undertakes his quest not only in the spirit of adventure, but also - as a recovering alcoholic admitting his fair share of folly - to set things right. And among the companions who join in for various legs, Joel's son plays a pivotal role. For wherever life takes us (remembering, as the author frequently does, that "the path is the goal and the goal is the path"), to be seen as heroic in the eyes of one's own grown-up child - in the midst of the ups and downs of a journey like this - is at least a sweet stop on the way.

I love this book written by a dedicated, seasoned writer and journalist. The book deftly interweaves several fields of knowledge and experience. Beautifully written! Highly recommended! And be sure to get the sequel.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Med rediscovered 9. November 2008
Von Taylor M. Chambers - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
The most fun I've ever had on a trip I didn't make. This book reads is easy reading - never boring. The author in trekking around the Mediterranean seems to have almost a story a step. His local and historical knowledge is impressive. Each curve of the beach, inlet, cove or nearby island comes with an event or myth or legend - some originally recorded by Homer, some as reported recently in local or national media. The book is sprinkled with intriguing bits and pieces about famous people the rest of us have met only in museums and gossip columns. A plus - the writer's love of nature and descriptive powers whet your appetite for Mediterranean travel. If you go, do take the book with you - a great guide!
