Kurzbeschreibung

Air Command pilot Nova Whiteside is assigned to a remote outpost to guard the construction of a tethered orbiter, Skyranch Twelve, against rebel sabotage. The difference between the well-ordered Union air fields and this dusty garrison is made painfully clear when she runs afoul a brutal commander of ground troops.

When she is trapped behind enemy lines in a bloody uprising she meets Djari, a civilian whose trust in the governing Union is shattered by what he has witnessed.

Indeed, not all runs according to protocol aboard the new station and she soon suspects that more than farming is being done up there. When she uncovers the treacherous and illicit schemes taking place, it seems that local riots are the least of their troubles.

5.0 von 5 Sternen OK, THIS one is my favourite... 11. September 2013
Von MsTee - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

With each new release of Reher's I have to eat my words from previous reviews. Did I say The Catalyst/Only Human/Rebel Alliances was my favourite of this series? Really? That's because I didn't read Sky Hunter yet, duh! :D

Here we have Nova Whiteside at the very start of her illustrious career. Brimming with optimism, she has a bit more training to complete before she can attain an admirable army pilot ranking. Her housing conditions and despicable colleagues are reason enough to push hard for that goal.

But of course, great achievements usually don't come easily, and during her training, Nova finds herself in unpleasant situations not only with her colleagues, but with rebel civilians who are fighting against the military organization she works for. Soon, Nova finds herself alone and defenceless, smack dab in the middle of the enemy camp. In the midst of this danger, she is forced to trust individuals she's not sure she should and to question certain beliefs she's held not only about herself, but of her organization.

And Nova isn't the only one who shines in this book. Every character plays their part and plays it well. Emotional reactions to loss and love are believable and relatable. The relationships - whether friends or lovers (and Reher definitely knows how to write those sexier scenes!) - are also a welcome side to the action-and-adventure packed main course of Sky Hunter. (As an aside: Though I enjoyed the friendships and romance found in the following books of this series, I personally believe Reher handled these themes the best in this book.)

If you've never read any books by Chris Reher, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the colourful, species-rich worlds and planets they have created in this book. While you'll achieve a greater understanding if you read 'Only Human' (third in the series), you can still appreciate and enjoy how well Reher has constructed these different species and the time Reher invested to make them come alive and share their part of the story.

I think it's obvious I greatly enjoyed this book. It's a perfect 5/5! There is a particular scene that greatly upset me, but to reveal this is a major spoiler and I think the emotional reaction to this scene is relative to the reader. In any case, this book is more than worth its price, the read, and the investment of your time. :D

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good story, but it's not a romance. 4. Januar 2015
Von Georgette W. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Nova Whiteside is a "military brat" who grew up on bases around the world, and is now a young Union pilot working to fulfill the flight hours required to reach the next pay-grade. I found her an admirable heroine; she's tough, incisive, inventive, has integrity and acts quickly. Measured against the corrupt members within and outside of the Union, she may seem idealistic and a bit naive; she refuses to back down when abused and is sorely disillusioned to find her complaints brushed off by her superiors. Unbeknownst to her, some of them are in cahoots with the villains.

Several reviewers found the rape incident, and the military's response to it, to be implausible. But it corresponds with what I've seen on investigative reporting shows covering such incidents, so I found it believable. Other reviewers have also said Nova seems unaffected by it but, from what I read, she's traumatized -- just not to the point of paralysis. In keeping with her character, she refuses to let the criminals derail her from the track to her goals.

Portions of the story are exciting and fast-paced, while other parts are bogged down by explanation, though some will likely find the latter interesting.

I agree with others that it could easily have been set on Earth. The various alien species aren't described vividly enough for the reader to see them. They seem more like different races.

In addition, I found this in the romance genre. It's NOT a romance. She does become involved with a man, but he's not a major character and there's no HEA . Both are essential for romance categorization. That said, it's a better read than many romances.

It's a decent story and worth reading, though I knew how it'd turn out long before the ending. Maybe the sequels will be better.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very original story 15. Oktober 2013

The author does a great job of making the hero interesting. I enjoyed the character development of the main character. The world building was really good and slipped in well with the pace of the story. An experienced pilot, Nova Whiteside, is assigned to a remote outpost to guard the construction of an important military site. This garrison duty is painful when she runs afoul a brutal commander of ground troops. The story twists are clever.

There is a rape element to the story.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Good space operas are one of my favorite genres 12. August 2014

Good space operas are one of my favorite genres. In Sky Hunter, Chris Reher delivers a good one. I'm glad I read it first, I will read the rest of the series as time permits. The author paints a broad picture of future space exploration with vivid, compelling words. But Sky Hunter is not only about the excitement of deep space, the characters are interesting and draw the reader into their lives and the stark reality of how they survive in a universe that deals harshly with errors. Nova Whiteside is a compelling character and readers can easily sympathize and identify with her. Nova is not a superhero, she is a highly trained and motivated human woman dealing with problems women have always dealt with in striving to live their lives to the fullest. I rarely give a book five stars, but this one drew me in so strongly from the first paragraph I had to.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Decent read, but simple characters 16. Januar 2016
Von A. K. Ragia - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Sky Hunter had a lot that appealed to me in a book: a strong female protagonist who is a fighter pilot, an interesting universe with military and political turmoil, and a unique setting with internal and external pressures leading to unrest. Unfortunately, the lack of well developed characters and a number of predictable plot twists left something to be desired.
The story follows Nova Whiteside, an ace pilot, through her new assignment on the remote planet Bellac where the Union she fights for is establishing bases to protect a wormhole-esque transit point in the system. In the beginning of the book, Nova is shown to be a competent, compassionate soldier, with almost unquestioning loyalty to her government. This remains true throughout the book, even after she is brutally assaulted by another soldier and her superiors sweep it under the rug. While I don't think, as some other reviewers do, that the assault was simply written in as a shock value plot device, I also don't think Nova's reaction to it was really sufficient given the seriousness of the crime. By the end of the book, the issue gets a too-good-to-be-true resolution.
Nova is written as an almost impossibly strong character who worries more about her comrades, her friends, and her career than herself. While I enjoy reading about a heroine who is genuinely good, Nova is a bit too perfect to be believed. Her only flaw is letting love blind her.
Her new beau, Djari, is also essentially one dimensional. He has so much compassion that it leads him to make questionable choices, but only out for selfless reasons.
While these characters aren't exceptionally complex, they aren't so badly written as to be boring.
The story itself was fun to read, even if there were few surprises, and I thought the universe presented some interesting possibilities for future works in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy to follow story with a strong heroine. Some subject matter is mature, but the descriptions aren't graphic so it could be read by a mature teen. Don't grab it looking for deep, complex character development, though, or you'll be disappointed.
