Kurzbeschreibung

Have you ever had a problem with performance nerves? Do you wish you could overcome your fears and get up on stage and perform music? With quick-fix solutions in mind, successful professional practitioners have been interviewed and grilled in the making of this E-Book, all of whom have overcome significant problems with nerves. There are chapters which help with sight-reading music, memorising scores and practising for accurate and stress-free performances. It is aimed at all performers of any ability or style. This book will go beyond the scope of other books exploring subconscious learning techniques and how to exploit motor memory for a calm performance. Drawing on 17 years of music performance teaching, the book explores ideas in a practical and honest way. There is nothing pretentious or complex about the writing or the techniques used in the book. All the techniques are reinforced with the latest Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques and are tried and tested on a wide range of performers of all ages. Includes wonderful illustrations by Ronnie Tucker.

5.0 von 5 Sternen ... book then any resource out there on becoming a better musician. This is a rare but important topic ... 3. Oktober 2016

As a local jazz professional sax player I found more value for my career in this book then any resource out there on becoming a better musician. This is a rare but important topic that has really not been written about. It has taking me to the next level of being a musician. I would wood shed a lot and get good technically but lacked the confidence to get gigs and lacked the confidence to play at better venues. Clive has great insight and advice to get past your negative talk and move forward with your own journey and not compare yourself to other musicians. I feel the book was just the tip of the iceberg on what Clive Stocker can offer. I have had a few email exchanges with him and you can tell he really feels passionate about helping all musicians get past their nerves and enjoy their music journey. If you get a chance email Clive and you will see what I am talking about. He really honestly cares about helping other musicians!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wish I'd had this years ago! 24. August 2014

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

I took piano lessons from 2nd-8th grade, was in the middle school concert band 6th-8th grade, did marching band all through high school, jazz band, indoor drumline, college pep band, etc. It's easy to tell I was a musician, both as an individual and in a group setting. I have to say, if I'd read this book back then, especially when I was doing piano recitals and such, I feel as though I would have been more confident in my talent as a performer.

This book is very beneficial and easy to understand at the same time. Looking back on my many years as a musician, I can easily see how incorporating many of these lessons would have helped me get through the "rough patches" of uncertainty, wavering confidence in my abilities, etc. It explains that it's okay to be nervous, because being nervous shows you're doing something you want to do. I always believed being nervous was a sign I wasn't prepared, but in reality, it's just because I loved playing instruments, and I was excited about it. That in itself would've been enough reason to have this book on my nightstand!

I would recommend this to anyone who was, is currently, or is planning to be a musician. Even though I don't play or perform anymore, I still found it a very interesting read, and it gave me reason to trip back down memory lane. I think it could definitely help up-and-coming performers, especially those just starting out who could use a confidence boost.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Time to Face the Music with Clive Stocker's How-To Guide "How to Become a Confident Performer" 5. April 2014
Von Nathan Mercer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
"How to Become a Confident Performer" by Clive Stocker can help even the most novice of performers overcome their anxieties and fears that they may have about going on stage and avoid pitfalls that musicians commonly face. The book is full of “tips & tricks”, so there is bound to be a nugget in the book that everyone can find. I do not have a musical bone in my body (and have even been boo’d off stage during karaoke), but I can relate to this book and solutions as I have to speak in public frequently.

The book is nicely illustrated and written in a manner that doesn’t “talk over your head” and make you feel stupid if you made some of the mistakes that the author discusses. The author states that he has over 15 years teaching music to people of all ages. This knowledge shines throughout this book. I would highly recommend this book for parents to give to their young musicians. Perhaps they can learn the lessons from this book and avoid them in real life later on.

Strengths

I like the style of writing that the author uses in this “self-help” book. Authors of this genre sometimes feel the need to “WOW” you with their intellect by over-complicating the topic and the advice. It doesn’t matter what you know if you can’t transmit the knowledge to someone else.

Grammar and spelling were not an issue.

Weaknesses

I was given an excerpt, so I couldn’t get a “feel” for how long the book was or some of the other things that were covered in the book. As a teaser, the excerpt is fine – but makes it difficult to give a full blown review.

There were moments when the author sounded as if he were making excuses for musicians – “Musicians are usually very busy,” “Musicians often fail to plan because they don’t have time” (not quotes, paraphrasing…) I want to meet the one person in this world that isn’t busy – it is as simple as this – some use time wisely and others don’t. If you told the Marine Corps Sergeant that you didn’t have time to accomplish something the response would be – “Did you sleep last night? Yes? Then you had time….” (Sorry for the rant – this is just a pet peeve of mine!)

The all text cover doesn't jump out at you. With the great illustrations inside, it makes the cover stand out even more.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Anyone can find this book helpful. 4. April 2014

Whether you are a musician, a teacher at a university or just someone who speaks in front of big audiences, you can find this book useful to overcome that cramping feeling in your stomach before a show/speech or just to master your skills. Although the major target audience of this book is musicians, anyone can benefit from advices and techniques that "How to Become a Confident Performer" offers. The author takes you step by step through stages of preparation for a brilliant performance, covering all the angles and giving the reader a feeling of confidence about "how to make it right". In other words, highly recommended.
