I suffer from severe lactose intolerance, so making my own ice cream is the only way I can really enjoy the treat. While many recipes call for heavy cream, I have found that I can substitute lactose free half-and-half and still have an excellent ice cream.

I have a refrigerated style ice cream maker (churns and freezes all in one.) I've found that while it takes up a big footprint in my cabinets, it is a fast and easy way to make ice cream.

What I lacked was recipes for a variety of flavors. I also was more inclined to make Philadelphia style ice cream (non-custard without eggs) and wanted to branch out into the custard styles. This book has a wide variety of recipes but most of them are custard style ice creams which require egg yolks, heating, cooling and then using your ice cream maker.

There are so many recipes, I didn't know where to start so I started with the one that may be peaked my interest and seemed easier than others: Dark Chocolate Ice Cream. The use of both semi-sweet chocolate and cocoa powder really amped up the chocolate flavor and was delicious. The next time I make it, I may throw in a tad of expresso to see what that does.

In a sense, these recipes are starting off points. For instance, I like my Rocky Road with almonds rather than pecans, so I can make that change. As I mentioned earlier, I use lactose free half and half but I am betting you can use almond milk or other non-dairy milks as well.

I'll be enjoying this book all summer long as I make treats for my grandchildren to enjoy when they come to visit. The only problem will be restraining myself from making and eating batches, just to test them once or twice.

This book contains some nice recipes with detailed instructions. How about some Cherry Chocolate Chip? OR maybe Chocolate Brownie? (Please note for this recipe it is presumed that you will already have the brownies.) There are several different versions of vanilla. Chocolate Banana is SO delicious!

You may have guessed by now that I am partial to chocolate but for those who are not, do not despair, there's Peanut Butter, Apple Cinnamon (made with fresh apples), Blackberry, Blueberry, Mango, Maple Walnut, Banana Rum, Cookie Dough and many more.

There is a linked index for ease of use. A few of the recipes, definitely not all, do use packaged ingredients like pudding mix and cool whip but they are in the minority not the majority. This is a great ice cream book to have on hand and one that is a KEEPER in this house!

Fruit, coffee, nuts. Big selection of recipes.
I have always used sweetened condensed milk in my ice cream recipes, it was nice to find alternatives to using it.
