Verifizierter Kauf

John Keegan bietet hier ein chaotisches Durcheinander von Themen, Schauplätzen, Zeiten, Völkern und vieles mehr. Wie ein Rezensent im Jahr 2000 schrieb, es fehlt dem Buch eine erkennbare Ordnung. Ohne erkennbaren Zusammenhang bemüht der Autor den Australopithekus, die Maori, die Azteken, Samurai, Steppenkrieger, die Wehrmacht und hunderte mehr. Die "Ordnung" ist sichtbar assoziativ und damit nicht transparent nachvollziehbar.
Gemäß dem alten Historikerspruch versucht der Autor den Lesern nicht etwas zu erklären sondern zu zeigen was er alles weiß.
Die meisten anderen Werke des Autors haben einen zeitlich und sachlich umschriebenen Fokus. Offenbar ist ihm die Fähigkeit nicht gegeben globale sowie universelle Themen zu verarbeiten.
Schlechter geht es kaum. Allein für die stupide Fleißarbeit derart viele Fakten aneinander zu reihen und angesichts der Würdigung anderer Werke dieses Autors gebe ich augenzwinkernd zwei Sternchen.
Keine Kauf- oder Leseempfehlung.

A scholarly, highly readable intro. to warfare

Keegan, as much as any living writer I've read, has the ability to combine great scholarship with sturdy reasoning and compelling, accessible language. Keegan skillfully argues his contra-Clausewitz point of view while providing a stunning history of warfare. He shows us that if one learns something about the history of warfare, one learns something about history--period (and vice versa). This is sad but true. I'm not always sure where Keegan's heart is; he sometimes seems to love the smell of napalm in the morning. But at the risk of sounding callous, I think this is a minor criticism. It is a given (for most of us) that war is a terrible, undesirable, but (Keegan shows) inevitable thing. Surely Keegan is the greatest living military historian. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. The book includes some well-chosen, helpful illustrations, and the notes are a great source for further reading.

Attack and Defending Clausewitz

Most of the negative commentary you will see by customers revolves around Keegan's blasting of Clausewitz.
Because there are a lot of Clausewitz fans who don't take kindly to the criticism.
What is really the case, however, is that Keegan is merely [mis]reading Clausewitz in much the same manner that ultra-rationalist military commanders of all stripes have [mis]read Clausewitz for far too many decades. The only thing Keegan does differently, after [mis]interpreting Clausewitz in much the same manner, is to then shows how fallacious the logic is.
It is true that Clausewitz included many qualifying phrases, and Keegan somewhat conveniently overlooks them. But the fact that Keegan overlooks them is a mere reflection on how so many military commanders also overlooked them, and I can hardly blame Keegan for the same mistaken intrepretations *MORE THAN* I blame all those military thinkers who were too quick to cut to the chase scene on Clausewitz's meaning.
And all of that is but a small portion of the book.
If you overlook that part, the book is absolutely fantastic, a completely riveting read. Keegan uses the rest of the book to illustrate historic examples that refute the ultra-rationalist approach, and then builds an alternate approach to undertsanding the nature and sources of warfare.
But if you find yourself really annoyed by Keegan's attack on Clausewitz, because you think the attack is richly undeserved, then you won't be able to get out of the starting gate. You'll detest the misintrepretation, and perhaps that will be enough to ruin the rest of the book for you.
Which is really too bad because, at its core, Keegan's book is an utterly fantastic tour through a history of warfare.
I would go on, but read some of the other comments for a more substantive review of the book's contents. My purpose was merely to clarify the source from which most of the negative reviews came.

Who are all these people whining about how Keegan "knocks" Clausewitz? Perhaps on the contrary, Keegan understands Clausewitz all too well. In any case, the traditional understanding of Clausewitz has become cliched and hackneyed in the hands of such "traditional" military thinkers. One of Keegan's strengths is his avoidance of theory. Evidence is too often butchered and distorted to concur with a prized theory that a scholar is loathe to let go of. Keegan looks at the evidence first and then puts together a theory of interpretation. If you want to knock Keegan, hit him for "Fields of Battle" for its lack of editing, gross factual errors, and maudlin sentiment.

Have you read Carl von Clausewitzs' "On War" and if so do you think it is THE classical text on warfare? If yes, you may want to skip the first 60 pages of Keegan's book which repudiates Clausewitzs' theory that 'war is the continuation of policy by other means.' 'A History of Warfare' has a unique approach - sweeping the subject up into 4 'themes' -stone, flesh, iron and fire- each covering a specific period or method of warfare. In between are 'interludes' on specific subjects - I found the one on fortification to be very interesting. Although encyclopedic in terms of scope and period covered, it is not a dry book. It is actually very easy to read and serves as a good introduction to military history. The book dives deeply into the cultural, and social factors behind war. Only where Keegan ventures into Philosophy in the first interlude 'war in human history' does he slip a little.

An Intriguing Perspective

Once again, Keegan provides the reader with an innovative look at warfare. In particular, he argues that the traditional (at least from a Western perspective) argument of warfare being an extension of politics is misguided, and that the cultural component of warfare must not be overlooked. He provides compelling examples from several different historical periods and cultures, and his conclusions might surprise the reader. A must read for any student of warfare.

If the reader is looking for a more or less chronological analysis of the technical, tactical and strategical developments in the field of warfare through human history, he will be disappointed with this book. A more truthful title would be ANTHROPOLOGY OF ARMED CONFLICT, being a highly speculative interpretation of second-hand received historical facts. If the questions that Keegan asks himself -how right was Clausewitz defining war as a continuation of politics... how Clausewitzean is this or that specific conflict... how purely European is the phalanx-style of battling... what is the source of human aggressivness...- appeal the interest of the reader, he won't feel that the reading of the book is a waste of time. Otherwise, he won't find it enriching at all.

An Important Book

This (in my opinion) is more a dissertation to provoke debate and discussion than an standard military history book. It discusses military history throughout the ages from a Clausewitzian viewpoint and the way war is prosecuted by different cultures at various points in history. Its an interesting and thought provoking book, its conclusions are interesting and I would say for anyone reading History in general at a university level this book is a must read. The insight and analysis of why and how various cultures fight shows why warfare has always been (and still is) a hugely important driver of society, possibly more influential than anything else on all our lives. I think that although all the theories in this book have been aired before by the author and others this pulls it all together and delivers a very useful and informative read ..... and some questions for further research.

Extremely literate, well-constructed consideration of the history of warfare, which advances the argument that contrary to von Clausewitz's mis-quote, "War is the continuation of policy by other means", that war is actually culturally determined, often irrational, and the subsuming of it as an almost legal means of the advancement of global policy is not only undesirable but potentially terrifying.
Also fascinating were the insights into Oriental idioms of warfare, the role of technology in battle, and the consideration of the anthropology of war amongst so-called "primitive" peoples. Keegan speaks about "primitive" war without really examining the ideology behind calling the peoples involved "primitive", which is probably my single quibble.
In all respects, however, the scholarship has the vast breadth that a history of world warfare requires and the style is readable while being eminently authoritative.
I think any thoughtful person would find this book interesting.

The first few dozens of pages are all about what was Klausewitz wrong about, which was a littlo too tedious for me. Don't be put off, though: after a slow start it gets just simply fascinating, presenting you the big picture and lots of tiny interesting details at the same time. A must-read for anyone interested in history, either professionally or as a hobby.
