Pressestimmen

"UFO's music is simply timeless, and to me they have created the greatest melodic hard rock ever." Eddie Trunk from the foreword

"UFO are and always will be classic rock at its best." Pete Makowski from the afterword.

Kurzbeschreibung

UFO are one of heavy rock's most influential groups, admired by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pearl Jam and Slash from Guns N Roses, amongst others. Albums like Lights Out, Obsession and Strangers In The Night have all achieved classic status.

The list of musicians who have passed through their ranks reads like a Who's Who of rock: Pete Way (God bless him), Michael Schenker, Larry Wallis, Bernie Marsden, Paul Chapman, Billy Sheehan, Jason Bonham, Aynsley Dunbar and more, have all done time in one of the most enduring, and endearing, bands.

Using extensive research and first hand interviews, top metal writer Neil Daniels traces UFO s history from their space rock roots in 1969 through to the present day, as the band, with original member Phil Mogg, just keep on rocking. The book contains a wealth of anecdotes about a group renowned for partying as hard as they rock and doing nothing by halves.

High Stakes & Dangerous Men includes a foreword by the American broadcaster and author Eddie Trunk and an afterword by British rock journalist Peter Makowski.

High Stakes & Dangerous Men is the first biography of UFO not including Martin Popoff's equally good book which focuses more on the albums and songs. There's been some complaints that this is a cut and paste effort. Sure, the author doesn't include interviews with the band and so it is not official, but he's gone into depth on the stories behind the albums especially High Stakes with interviews with Kit Woolven, Laurence Archer and Clive Edwards. Daniels has interviewed ex members and producers and has written a detailed yet compact book on the history of the band going back to 1969. he obviously loves the music and the band but he is objective in his account. I've read some of Daniels' other books, including his excellent tomes on Judas Priest and Journey, and this is probably better. It makes a nifty companion to Popoff's own book.

Having previously read Neil Daniels’ “The Story Of Judas Priest- Defenders Of The Faith” and “Don’t Stop Believin’: The Untold Story of Journey”, I decided to give this book a chance as well. Despite being an unofficial biography, he still manages to pack in some interviews with former band members Lawrence Archer, Danny Peyronel and Clive Edwards, as well as several British producers (Nick Tauber, Kit Woolven and Mick Glossop) and American rock producer Ron Nevison.

As with some of Mr. Daniels’ previous books, there is bound to be a barrage of complaints about the lack of involvement from the band (that’s why it says ‘unofficial’- get over it), but the history of the band’s career, going back all the way to 1969, is detailed enough in and of itself.

The highlights of the book include the band’s touring history during the 1970s, and the making of the band’s iconic 1992 album (the inspiration for the book’s title) ‘High Stakes And Dangerous Men’.

This isn’t entirely new ground for the author , and as such- while fairly polished- it won’t set the world alight. It is still well-written and detailed, and well worth a read for rock fans who are willing to give it a go. With that said, I am really looking forward to reading his book on ZZ Top.

HASH(0x9951d7f8) von 5 Sternen an excellent read! 3. Februar 2014

UFO are one of the best loved British rock bands of the 70s and 80s, and one of the least documented too, but that’s not the only thing that makes this book a must-have for anyone who cares. Painstakingly detailed and joyously written by someone who clearly cares as much for the band as anybody, it tells UFO story in lavish, but unflinching detail. The early years unfold with a detail that probably not even the band members recall with such clarity, while Daniels’ eye for anecdote means almost every page will make someone either laugh, cry, or wish they were there. And for anyone who complains that the band themselves have little input into the story, remember this. When you invite the subject of a biography to contribute to it, you also invite them to whitewash it. You can’t blame them for that, of course - it’s human nature to want to be seen in what you think is your best light. But a great rock book needs the “lights out” as well, and Daniels achieves that brilliantly.

A nice compliment to the "Story of UFO" video of a few years ago. Neil Daniels does a nice job starting from their inception to the most recent line up. No juicy details of debauchery, just a nice overview of a widely unknown band. Maybe one day we'll get more if Mr. Mogg decides to write a book.

I notice that this book has some 4 & 5 star reviews but also a scathing 1 star review. I partially agree with the 1 star review because the book is clearly put together from a wide variety of sources and doesn't really flow as a result. However, other than Shoot out the Lights, there really isn't a lot of information out there and there was a lot of new material from my perspective- at least partially because it's been a while since I read Martin Popoff's book. I think this book is clearly worth the money just for what it does provide and was a fast read which I always prefer.

Having said that, there were a lot of obvious errors or missed opportunities. I just skipped over them but then towards the end, they started bothering me. Here are two of them that are worth pointing out

1) In his comments about Covenant, Neil Daniels says "Fools Gold slows down the pace considerably; it is a somewhat average ballad." Anyone who is familiar with Covenant knows that while the beginning of Fools Gold is slower paced, most of the songs rocks harder than many UFO songs (especially later day UFO) and is far cry from a ballad. I find this kind of error inexcusable. I would expect this kind of comment from someone who just plays the first 30 seconds of a song to construct their opinion.
2) On page 181, there is a very brief paragraph on Paul Raymond's contributions to the band finally being recognized and to paraphrase, that the 'issue' has been dealt with. While most hardcore UFO fans are familiar with the fact that Paul initially didn't get songwriting credits on Lights Out, Obsession, and No Place to Run, I found it a completely missed opportunity to tell the story of why he didn't get credit when they were first released. Clearly this book goes into a lot of detail but I find this story one of the most interesting in their history.

Overall, I think this is a good read and has a lot of information. Well worth it but be aware of some of the shortcomings to avoid disappointment.
