    Produktbeschreibungen

Stick In The Wheels heiß ersehntes Debüt-Album ‚From Here‘ ist eine rohe, erfrischende Interpretation englischer Folk-Musik. Jahrhunderts.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Winner of fRoots album of year 2015, fresh, raw folk recorded with live feel, distinct cockney accents bit of acquired taste,
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 12. Dezember 2015
This debut album has scooped the folk Roots Magazine album of the Year for 2015, quite an achievement for a new group. The 5 piece band cover a number of well known folk classics, and it has a distinctly vital rough and ready raw unadulterated live feel. indeed, some of the tracks were recorded simply in front rooms according to the sleeve notes. Nicola Kearey has a strong lead vocal throughout, with a distinct "cockney" accent, which some commentators have found a bit contrived and a rather acquired taste. Well known songs like Hard Times (of old England) have a fresh unfussy full on approach, some of the tracks have lots of handclaps, and you can imagine you are in a cosy spit and sawdust pub at a stomping informal folk session. The naturalness of the sound with straightforward live arrangements and no studio trickery make it stand out as sounding distinctly different from the crowd. They have an uncomplicated honest approach, grasping the songs with infectious enthusiasm and amateur sounding commitment, and going for it bigtime, and it works. I am not sure whether it is as genuine as it sounds, or all a bit contrived, but it has obviously hit the mark with knowledgeable folk critics as a stunning new breath of vital fresh air. So I am happy to take this at face value, and enjoy something that stands out from the crowd. I would imagine they are highly entertaining to see in live performance, and on the basis of this prestigious award hopefully they may tour the country extensively in the future, with a chance to see (and hear) what all the fuss is about in the flesh.

This is my favourite cd of 2018 so far!
A tough and tender mix of traditional folk songs and the band's own memorable compositions.
They really remind me of the heady days of the early-mid 80's when 'folk/punk' was all the rage, with bands and singers such as the Pogues, The Men They Couldn't Hang, The Mekons , Billy Bragg and We Free Kings fused the energy and anger of punk with folk music.
Start with this one , then buy ' Follow Them True' and 'From Here- English Folk Field Recordings, which is a collection of English folk songs curated by Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter, which features a who's who of English folk song , you won't be disappointed!.

Stick in the Wheel are a brilliant folk band, with exciting new interpretations of classic songs and great new material . They are worth looking up on Youtube ,with fine graphics in videos by Teresa Elizabeth Lobos. Better still ,go and see them live. I did, in a crummy bar on Brighton pier . Stunning set .What don`t I like ? The fact that this fine album is no longer available on vinyl.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Pretty Flawless
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 31. August 2018
This album is pretty flawless, there is something special going on here. Original and standards flow seamlessly together, underpinned by simple rhythms, drones and spooky down the spine melodies. Weirdly stirring and mysterious all at the same time. There's humour here too, its political but doesn't preach, righteous, angry and sharp. The singing and story telling is compelling, precise and totally believable. Buy it.
