Kurzbeschreibung

Two women downsized by corporate America move to Maine to raise chickens and sell organic eggs, and discover more than they bargained for, including love! A gentle-read romance, "Hens and Chickens" is the first book in The Sovereign Series by Maine farmer and author Jennifer Wixson.

The Sovereign Series is set in the mythical farming town of Sovereign, Maine (pop. 1,048) noted for goodhearted and lovable characters, who weave in and out of the four books like old friends dropping in for a cup of tea. "Peas, Beans and Corn," the second book in the series, was released to rave reader reviews in June 2013 and the much-anticipated third book, "The Songbird of Sovereign," was published July 19, 2014. The fourth installment, "The Minister's Daughter," will be published Fall 2015, accompanied by The Sovereign Series Cookbook containing recipes for all the traditional Maine dishes featured in the four novels. The series was originally slated to end with four books; however, White Wave Publishing recently announced there will be at least two more novels. You can follow Jennifer on Twitter @ChickenJen and find the latest on her writing on her Facebook author's page, facebook.com/Jennifer.Wixson.author.

Readers have warmly embraced the series, a blend of Maine history and modern rural living, describing "Hens & Chickens" as "a modern-day Jane Austen romance" and echoing the wishes of one enthusiastic reviewer who wrote: "I want to get in my car and drive to Sovereign, Maine!"

Kick your shoes off; curl up in a comfy chair; and prepare to lose yourself in the wonderful world of Sovereign, Maine!

This is a clean romance novel. When I bought this book it was marketed under 'Christian Fiction'. If you are expecting a fundamental Christian thread as I was, please be aware. Mentioning Christ or scripture does not make it a Christian book. The book is a recounting by a Universalist preacher (who for some reason likes to run naked through a field alongside the highway once a year). The story is written with a poetic feel and unique perspective which was a nice departure from the norm. The storyline was mostly lighthearted with some tragedy in parts. Personally, I just can't recommend a book that uses my Lord's name as both blessing and curse. The use of the 'f' word within these pages is less offensive to me than the misuse of God's name.

HASH(0x9666bb1c) von 5 Sternen Charming Story 28. Juli 2012

I've always been fascinated by Maine - quaint villages, lighthouses, rocky shores. I've never been there, but it looks and sounds beautiful. Jennifer Wixson's book, "Hens and Chickens", just added to my love of Maine. Ms. Wixson's vivid descriptions of the people and the countryside have me ready to book my plane tickets.

"Hens and Chickens" is a lovely story of two women who leave the city and their corporate jobs to start a business together in rural Maine. There's both romance and mystery, but what I loved most were the people. The story is cleverly told through a narrator, who's identity we don't discover until late in the book. The ability of the narrator to speak directly to the reader - an "aside", as they call it on stage - made the story unique.

I appreciated Ms. Wixson's romantic couple, who valued honor and respect above sex. I also enjoyed her depiction of the lifestyle and craftsmanship of earlier generations, and a return to that simpler way. The story is a perfect blend of old and new - sewing, raising chickens in a farmyard, baking, mixed with cell phones and computers.

The story of The Egg Ladies, Lila and Mike's romance, the secrets in Lila's past - all weave together to make a great read but, for me, it was all about the characters and location. I'm in love with the charming village of Sovereign, Maine, and it's inhabitants and can't wait to go back. Good thing there are at least two more books planned in this series.

HASH(0x9666bf00) von 5 Sternen Author Wixson Brings Love, Laughs, and Inspiration in Hens and Chickens 27. Juli 2012
Von S. Palmer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Broschiert
Jen Wixson brings to us exactly what she promises in her title, Hens and Chickens...A Story About Love. A story of love it is, and a journey of two women who experience loss and disappointment in their busy and productive lives in Boston - and the amazing journey that helps them find their own special ways to move on.
Wixson has a way with plot and character development that takes the reader along the lives of stalwart and best-friends Lila Woodsum and Rebecca Johnson as they take to the highway north from the city and hell-bent on a new life and work opportunity in the rural town of Soverign, Maine.
When we meet Lila and Rebecca they are deep in the throes of 21st century Boston, working in the corporate world, complete with tweets to their tweeps. Little did they know their lives would take interesting twists and turns, gaining new lessons, facing the past of good and evil, with humor, discovery and sadness, all circling back to the rewards of friendship, and bravely taking risks with love and life.
The real Maine, often believed to be a mystique, is prevalent in Hens and Chickens, from the familiar setting in real Maine towns, to exclusive Maine humor and accents so well known, to the farm kitchen and pot roast `suppah' and to the gardens and barn, complete with hens, chickens, and delicious deep yellow yolk eggs.
An inspiring, well-written, and descriptive novel, the reader becomes quickly involved in the characters and plot, reluctant for an inevitable conclusion, and, when it occurs, hoping the author is already at work on the next novel to continue the story of these sensitive and unique characters we came to know and love in Hens and Chickens...A Story About Love.

HASH(0x9666d0d8) von 5 Sternen Quite simply wonderful!! 17. August 2012
Von Marie C. Cordalis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

"Hens and Chicks" like love seem to spread spontaneously in Sovereign, Maine...I want to move there!
This is a wonderful, heart warming story of some very damaged people finding a place, hope and healing in a quirky little town, with quirky, loving, forgiving and understanding residents.
Lila and Rebecca need a new life, so they take a big chance on a once in a life time opportunity. It's the best chance they ever took.
If you're old enough to remember books and movies like "The Egg And I" and "It's a Wonderful Life" this book will strike a chord with you.
If you're ready for some happy every after, (not that the characters don't have to work and suffer to obtain it), read this book! It was a treat!!

I received a free copy of this book in order to review it and I'm SO thankful I did :)

I thought it was okay to begin with. I actually looked forward to finding out what would happen with the two friends when they moved to Maine....
Then it got stupid...saccharine & creepy at the same.
The author is all over the place and it just bored me to death. (plus...i'm not fond of the whole New Age/pagan/semi-Christian theology!)
It's a waste of time & money
