Kultmusical in englischer Sprache!

This was way ahead of its time. A story and representation of a drag queen's life from a young boy to a glam rock raving queen.
Based on a mosaic of several real life people (including the director/actor), mulching them together, adding a femme fascáde and stage name, and... you get the picture.
The storyline is delivered via the songs with little dialogue between to drive the narrative into the next scene. A visual feast of quirky sets, outrageous costumes & makeup mixed with utterly brilliant theatrical rock, this takes you on a queer extravaganza of looking for love in all the wrong places whilst trying to make sense of a complex character in mixed up circumstances following a simple narrative; getting recognition for one's own uniqueness after it's been stolen by someone so close.
Oh the hurt!
An all out non-stop angry, but humorous ride of a disaffected and displaced East German band, called "The Angry Inch", lead by a fairly determined but disjointed Femme Facade by the name of Hedeig. Dissatisfied with a life on permanent tour, trying to make sense of all that is thrown at her, Hedwig can only philosophise through her songs so she can get up again and again, and let the music and the hurt shine through with freekish regularity.
This IS a cult film, as was the Off Broadway theatrical production, but more slick. If you are ok with gender bender camp rock & roller coasters like The Rocky Horror Show, then you will be ok with this one.
The extras are lengthy with an in-depth look at the history and development of the Hedwig concept through it's slow burn to greatness.
All in all: Good viewing, well edited, sound mixing is excellent, script brilliant, acting is so well done, music outstanding.
Very much worth a watch.
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch", based on an off-Broadway show (now a Broadway show) is not just a musical in the classic sense. There are songs, but these have been written by a rock group with a clear understanding of music, so it's not just a film for musical lovers, but a film that can be enjoyed by people who don't enjoy musicals but enjoy rock music. The songs aren't set pieces, but rather develop the story and show character and emotional state. They work as brilliantly standalone songs (listen to the off-Broadway cast album and see).
"Hedwig" features most of the original cast. John Cameron Mitchell manages a layered and deeply-moving performance as Hedwig, the East German transsexual who came to America in his search for his Other Half. Miriam Shor gives a poignant performance as Yitzhak, Hedwig's Croatian husband. The cast all give amazing performances, and a strong seam of humour runs under the film.
This film is about so much more than issues of sexual identity. This film covers love, loss, identity, sacrifice, and growth in a sensitive manner, and it is a perfect film to watch in a group and discuss.
Completely recommended.
The story of Hansen a sensitive, introvert, fey Child living with a neurotic Mother in a crumbling post Communist limbo, a sad, joyless world, a claustrophobic, nightmare where the only colour is the sounds of Rock music on to the American Forces radio.Trapped in this Hell is Hansen with his head in the oven to escape the rants and bitterness of a Woman once loved then spurned and finally betrayed.
From this simple enough thread a whole colorful patchwork of past traumas, fabulous dysfuntional friendships, surrogates families, towering wigs, shabby betrayals, glamour, bitter disappointments,Music, laughter and tears; unfold like a magic carpet to transport the spectator beyond all expectations.
The Amazing John Cameron Mitchell is a powerhouse singing with conviction the most affecting lyrics heard in decades;his performance alone will bring tears to the eyes of the most jaded critics. At the core of his amazing movie are the Songs, their "Raw Power" will have you turning over the furniture and dance.Added to the mix is the dark humour, the classic one liners delivered with a raised eyebrow and a flash of lipstick. The Trashy aestethics of the dysfunctional Family will leave you speechless;giving to the movie an extravagant sheen.
Despite the unbashed optimism that shines through the story, the dark undertow of cruel set backs, long held prejudices,Rejections ,Homophobia and ignorance;will remind everyone that this is no Rom Com;but instead a serious piece of Drama. Thus allowing everyone with a Conscience to question deeply held beliefs without preaching. For once, believe the Hype, purchase this treasure and share it with your friends, you will laugh, cry, dance and sing long after the last credits have rolled and the music faded...
The DVD itself is very good and the copy I bought on Amazon including a feature length "Making of", which tells the story of the development of the character and story, even going back to before the first production of the play was staged. Loads of great footage of early stage performances, interviews and in-depth discussions and descriptions of the production process are included, which should be of interest to any fan. A commentary by John Cameron Mitchell and the director of photography Frank DeMarco is also included, with some Deleted Scenes and more. All in all a great DVD and a great film, at least in my opinion.
The songs are strong enough to stand on their own, especially the opening number 'Tear Me Down ', and my favourite, the beautiful, 'Wicked Little Town'. Moving, incredibly funny, uplifting and knowingly hip, this film ticks all the boxes. One could write a thesis on teh number of issues raises; sexuality, transexualism, personal sacrifice and fulfilment - and not least song copyright infringement. John Cameron Mitchell has created an unforgettable character in Hedwig. He has a great voice and totally embodies the character. Vulnerable, inspirational - and very funny - Hedwig represents us all. The costumes are wonderful, and so too are the supporting cast. Let's not forget Stephen Trask the writer of songs.
A movie worth owning, that you will revisit again and again.
