Kurzbeschreibung

With no means to support herself, Ellie Kilmer agrees to work as a housekeeper for the young widower who lives on Dillon Island, hopeful she can obtain a proper reference. But Jackson Smith quickly realizes that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems--both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage.

When a marriage of convenience is offered, Ellie is initially humiliated. Though she is past the age most women marry, she has more pride than to agree to his outlandish suggestion. Yet what options does she have? To marry would mean a home and stability. So despite the rumors circling Jackson and his first wife, Ellie accepts this unlikely proposal...

A slow-paced story, but at no time boring, about faith and trust in God, about partnership and honesty in a relationship, with very sympathetic and realistic characters, a brilliant plot and a narration style that draws the reader right into the story, only releasing him/her when the last page is reached.
Ellie with her principles, her stubbornness (oh I loved her fights with the "newfangled" oven), Jackson with is insecurities and hurts deep inside - how these two learn to trust each other, how Ellie tries to get the children to open up and accept her is a story well told which I found hard to put down at any time.
I would love to read more of this author.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Miserable hero 14. Februar 2014
Von KindleKeri - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I have to agree with the other 1 star review. This is the most miserable hero I've ever read in a book. I love Christian romance novels because they are clean and inspirational. What a disappointment. I kept thinking out loud what a bum the hero was and yelling for the heroine to just leave. OK, I know it's just a book, and it probably is how things were in 1840, but I would have lived in the woods before I would have put up with this guy. I think he couldn't get over his dead wife, that he didn't actually like anyway, his missed opportunity with the girl who threw him over and then kept throwing up to the heroine how unattractive she was as if he had anything to offer. What a bum! I am at least happy I didn't pay for this one, but I am sorry I took the time to read it.

2.0 von 5 Sternen predictable and a bit tedious 7. März 2014

Spoiler alert - don't read my review if you don't want the plot revealed.

An okay book if you need to kill time. I didn't enjoy the main character's nastiness towards the heroine. She showed more patience and fortitude than is normal. Unbelievable start with a marriage proposal on day 3 of knowing each other. Annoying scenario of his being handsome and her being too "plain". Insolent and insulting children towards the heroine - Dad should have put a stop to that on day 1.

Plus, why does she offer up "silent prayers"? Wake up America and pray out loud with your children. How will they ever learn to follow God if you keep your faith hidden.

The book had potential, but just not polished or believable.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Well developed characters, something was missing though. 3. Oktober 2014
Von Krystal - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I originally found this novel for free under the Historical Romance section, so was very surprised to learn that not only is it a "historical romance", but it is also a "Christian romance" as well. While that in itself doesn't bother me, there were enough "other issues" that caused me to give it a 3 star rating.

First, lets focus on the positive aspects of this novel. The characters were very well written. Ellie was strong willed, and forced to choose between accepting this unconventional proposal, or being stuck with her cousin and his wife (who made it no secret that they did not like having her around). Jackson was a tortured soul who had not only lost his first wife in a scandal, but whose faith was also severely lacking (not to mention his heart belonged to another woman entirely). His sons were even well thought out and dealing with the loss of their mother in their own ways. The oldest Daniel, reminded Ellie at every turn of her short comings ("Mama never did this"), while the youngest Ethan, had not spoken a single word to anyone since his Mother's death. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their plights.

Now on to the negative aspects. Even though Jackson was dealing with many things (as stated above), I found him to be a real jerk. He constantly jumped to conclusions with Ellie, even going so far as to throw coins at her feet and order her out of his home for "disobeying" him, even though he didn't know the dire circumstances that lead her to react the way that she did.

Also, it seemed as though their relationship was too "rushed" at the end. Perhaps it was just me, but when there was little to no real "romantic" moments or "tender feelings" through 90% of the book (especially when Jackson himself refers to Ellie as plain, and does nothing to dispel the rumors that he married her because she wasn't the type to attract a man's affections), when the ending finally happened, I felt like I was missing something important. I feel there should have been more of these moments leading up to the ending, especially since the arrival of another key player could have lead to some tense and interesting moments above what was written.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Ellie was great, Jackson ruined the book 9. März 2016

Ok, something about this book bothered me and it wasn't until I read another review that I realized what made me dislike it. While I loved Ellie, I ended up hating Jackson. While at the end he supposedly became strong in his faith, he faces a decision whether to stay married to Ellie or not (there is more to the decision, but I don't want to spoil the whole book).
I would give Ellie four or five stars, but Jackson I wouldn't give one. His faith doesn't come out in his actions. He is a weak man with no true character who doesn't feel like he should be in a Christian book
2.0 von 5 Sternen Hearts Awakening 29. November 2014

Ellie Kilmer has been dealt a rough hand at life. Having been caretaker for her elderly parents until their deaths, Ellie is now in her thirties and being passed around to live with whichever relatives will grudgingly open their homes to her. When she meets young widower Jackson Smith and he almost immediately asks her to consent to a marriage of convenience for the sake of his young sons, she agrees because at least she'll have a respectable place in the world again.

Jackson is pleased to have Ellie's help in raising Daniel and Ethan, but he can't believe that for the second time he has married a woman he doesn't love. The scars of his first wife's unfaithfulness influence the way he views Ellie, too. He holds her to the agreements they forged before marriage and is quick to suspect that she might be doing things he does not approve of. Their marriage feels tentative all the way around.

Giving it her best, Ellie fights with determination to win a place in Daniel and Ethan's hearts and live peaceably with Jackson, even while challenging him to meet her halfway in her efforts to make their house a home. She tries to be accepting of Jackson's emotions even when he is the opposite towards her.

This wasn't a story I would go back and reread, but it wasn't so bad that I struggled to finish it. The story took unpredictable turns, and I found Ellie to be a good role model for standing up for oneself. She fought for what she saw was right, no matter what it cost her. That's the kind of heroine one can cheer for!
