Pressestimmen

“With realistic and a sharp depiction of relationships, Giffin crafts an emotional, effortless read.” ―More magazine

“Like Giffin's previous books, Heart of the Matter is a story about love, relationships, and infidelity, with a decidedly Sex and the City tone, so I think Nixon is a natural pick to orate it.” ―Entertainment Weekly

“Cynthia Nixon narrates the audiobook and she is just fantastic. She has the ability to convey a lot of emotion with her voice and I was impressed with her performance.” ―Daemon's Books

“Very well done - I didn't realize until I was most of the way done that the voice is Miranda from Sex and the City. She does a great job.” ―My Reading Room

4.0 von 5 Sternen Not your typical story af adultery 2. März 2012
Von Kenlah0406 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is the first Emily Giffin book I have ever read. Actually, I listened to it on CD. I really enjoyed it. It is thoughtfully and sensitively written. I loved hearing the story from both the wife and other woman's point of view. Emily writes with just the right amount of description and detail along with making her characters real and totally believable. At every page turn I found myself feeling empathy for every character, even Nick. I also have to mention that the book was narrated by Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City" fame. Her portrayal of the book was genius! It added so much to Emily's already beautifully written words.

Just when you think you have a clear cut view of what life is all about or about what you will or won't do, you find that it is very rare for any person to be all good or all bad. There are more areas of gray in this life than just black or white. This book speaks to what it means to human, which mean to be imperfect. It speaks to the choices we make and the reasons for those choices and how they shape our lives, as well as the people's lives around us.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another Great Read by Emily Giffin 26. Januar 2013
Von D. K. Hamilton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I admit I held off on reading Heart of the Matter for well over a year despite being an Emily Giffin fan. The synopsis seemed different from her other books, and I read multiple reviews that weren’t as glowing as the ones for her previous four books. However, I’ve been hooked on her writing style since last spring. She has the innate ability to eloquently portray real life circumstances through the actions of her characters. I know many authors (if not most) exhibit the same skill set, but what I’ve found separates Ms. Giffin from the rest is her knack to not necessarily turn the tables of right and wrong or good and bad, but illustrate how good people with no ill intentions can do the wrong thing. Heart of the Matter is no different.

Tessa and Valerie are two mothers living in the Boston area with little in common until one night, an accident intertwines their lives and flips both of their worlds upside down. Unlike her first four books, Heart of the Matter is told in alternating points of view delivering the story of these two women as they are forced to examine their lives, decisions they’ve made, and what is the heart of the matter.

5.0 von 5 Sternen four about adultery 13. Juli 2010
Von Nitty's Mom - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
It appears that adultery is the flavor of the month. I have read four books with this theme during the last two months. Here goes:

"My wife's affair" is one of the best books I have ever read. I have already reviewed it. To me it was more about how your actions can cause a sunami and that sometimes there are no do-overs in life. The what-if's. I can't understand how this book has not received more attention. 5 plus stars.

I felt "Heart of the Matter" was Emily Giffin's best book. It is also about adultery told through the eyes of three very engaging characters. Both women (Tessa/Valerie)alternate chapters. Valerie is a single mother who comes in contact with Nick (Tessa's husband) when her young son is burnt at a child's birthday party. Tessa is the ex-professional who has given up her career to concentrate on her two young children. Nick (the plastic surgeon) does not have his own chapters, but is the man literally in the middle. All three characters are very well written and sympathetic. No villains in this story. After reading all previous books, I'm not surprised that Emily Giffin ended the book the way she did. I also agreed with the ending. For this story was also about a journey and each character has a better understanding of themselves at the end of the book. This was the thinking man/women chick lit, which may have put Emily Giffin at the top of the pack.

"Love in Mid Air" is a very well written book. Kim Wright certainly has a great deal of insight about this topic. Her main character Elyse Bearden is a powerhouse of a character, not to be forgotten. My only problem was that I did not like her. Like chalk on the blackboard, she grated on my nerves. While there was a page on what Elyse initially saw in her husband Phil, this marriage was over long before she takes Gerry's business card on a flight from Phoenix. I kept wanting to say, enough---just go already. What kept me reading was the interactions between her woman friends, and how Elyse's affair, changes the so called equilibrium in all her other relationships. 3 stars.

"The swimming pool" is a slow moving book about the ramifications of adultery on ones family. Marcella is a 40ish women who has an affair with an acquaintance and later in the book his son. All the characters felt flat to me, like the air was let out of their tires. This book was also reviewed as a mystery, as Maracella's lovers wife was murdered, and her son and daughter need closure. Was their father a killer? The answer is evident 1/2 way through the book, and adds nothing to the story. A very unemotional/distant story. It added nothing to this subject matter. 2 stars.

4.0 von 5 Sternen iHeart Giffin 14. November 2010

One night can change a whole life. Nick gets an emergency phone call during his anniversary dinner with wife, Tessa. A little boy named Charlie has been rushed to the hospital with burn injuries. As the best pediatric plastic surgeon, Dr. Nick must abandon dinner when duty calls.

Val is a distraught single mom. She struggled with allowing her son Charlie to go to a sleepover. Then an accident happens and changes her whole world.

The two families lives collide. Nick struggles with his feelings. Tessa is confused about the quality of her marriage. Val desperately wants love and a father figure for her son.
Author Emily Giffin tells both sides of the story. You'll care about the characters after reading and understanding their point of view. Like her previous books, Something Borrowed and Something Blue (which are my all time favorites), I found myself rooting for the mistress. We also get to see the return of a couple of the old characters. The situation that Nick, Val, and Tessa find themselves in can really happen. I heart Giffin for her books that are true to life and about the real matters of the heart when it comes to love.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Suburban Matters of the Heart 8. Juni 2010
Von The Book Bird - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Emily Giffin's books always make me squirm-- not because the plot-lines or characters are outrageous or racy, but because Giffin magnificently manages to put into words the realistic and complex emotions of her characters. HEART OF THE MATTER examines the relationship between surgeon Nick Russo and his wife, Tessa, who is the sister of Dex (SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE). Living a somewhat idyllic, Stepford-esque life, Tessa finds her world turned upside down when Valerie and her burn-victim son enter their lives. Giffin does a fantastic job of creating on paper the claustrophobic suburban environment, but fails in creating memorable, developed male protagonists (something I've found in all of her books). A enjoyable, if slightly predictable, read that is more involving than your typical chick-lit, beach novel, you'll find yourself at points throwing the book across the room in frustration (with the characters, not the writing), and then chasing after it....
