' It fully justifies its existence by virtue of the comprehensive coverage given to each ' Birdwatching (July 2009) "A must-have book for anyone interested in birds, beginner or otherwise." Highland News (June 2009) 'Contains much basic information in concise and conveniently accessible form, and it will go in an OS map-sized pocket.' Scottish Birds (2009) 'You might expect a glowing review about an RSPB book in birds - and in this case it is well-deserved.' Bookends (2009) '...it is difficult to imagine a better introduction to the birds of Scotland' Book Review - British Ornithologists' Union (2009)
In this new book, the text, maps and plates of the bestselling RSPB Handbook of British Birds have been adapted to create a brand new book specific to Scotland and its rich birdlife. Over 250 species are covered in detail with a page per species. The species accounts include concise information on identification, voice, habits, habitat, food, breeding ecology, seasonal movements, population and conservation. Detailed maps have been specially created to show distribution when breeding, wintering or on migration. Superb colour illustrations from some of the world's leading artists have been integrated into the text for easy reference.Alle Produktbeschreibungen

mapping by birding locations and am looking forward to seeing lots of life list birds.
Each of the plates is arranged with the information and the species illustrations mixed on one plate which didn't seem to interfere with the use of this guide. Each species is well illustrated with multiple plumages for male, female, juvenile, eclipse and non-breeding plumages, where needed, covering over 1000 illustrations. The range maps are especially handy in that they only cover Scotland and are nice and bright and easy to read plus they are in color to help gauge where a species will be in a particular time of year. In other general European guides Scotland is a speck on most maps and it is hard to judge where a species may lie.
All the species are covered in text including identification, habits, voice, habitat, food, breeding, movements and migrations, population, and conservation. There is a good amount of detail that will help as well as notes on confusing species and what pages they are on if needed. There is also a glossary and index at the back.
Having used this in the field I found it is an easily portable and reliable field guide. It's not heavy and all the information on any Scottish birds you are likely to come across is in here and easy to ID. Myself and another guide were quite impressed with how good the illustrations and information was. He also purchased a copy of it and at the list price it's understandable as this is an excellent value as far as field guides go.
