Attempts of interfaith dialogue often stay away from the more difficult issues and remain somewhat superficial. With his 'Halal Monk' journey, Atlas wanted to go further. He wanted to get to the root of our current tensions. To do so, he spoke with people like Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, Abida Parveen, Imam Feisal Rauf, Amina Wadud, Kudsi Ergüner, Muhammad Abdel Haleem, Musdah Mulia, Ziauddin Sardar, Amir Sulaiman, Mona Siddiqui, Aki Nawaz, Peter Sanders, Cyrus McGoldrick, Abdulwahid Van Bommel and many others.
This book collects his most fascinating dialogues at the intersection of culture, society and religion. In between those conversations, some extra light is shed on key concepts of the Islamic tradition and their relevance for today's debates.
Topics as diverse as quranic exegesis, islamic mysticism and islamic feminism are all treated in a nuanced manner. Difficult subjects like islamic fundamentalism and jihad, aren't circumvented but placed within their context and clarified. Aspects of the islamic faith like sharia and ijtihad are explained and juxtaposed with the Christian tradition.
'Halal Monk: A Christian on a Journey through Islam' is one of the most insightful and honest books on Muslim culture, spirituality and theology. A must read for anyone who wants to have a better grasp of the place of islam in the modern world.

Being a Muslim and knowing Jonas, made me longing to read this book as soon as possible once I heard it was available as e-book. Now, some weeks later I finishes the last page, and I don’t regret. The book is what it promised to be, a walk of an interested religious men trough the landscape of Islam, talking to a number of Muslims. He brings a honest image of a majority that includes more than a quarter of the world population, far from prejudices and clichés.
This book should indeed be required reading in all schools, no matter what religious background the students have. For non-Muslims a window with a view on the meaning of Islam and to the Muslim, an understanding of how a Non-Muslim with an open mind is looking at Islam
Perhaps a rare criticism, it was better for completion of the work to also invite a representative of "radical Islam" to have their say as well, they are there too and they fit into the overall picture of the community. To really understand the “ummah” one has to understand all of the parts of it.
All in all a healthy work being worth to recommend. The book is written from an honest search for the reason why so many people would adhere to something which is said to be so wrong.
The book is published in Dutch too under the name “Soefi's, Punkers & Poëten. Een christen op reis door de islam.”
Jonas is a men from who the Quran says in surah 3 aya 199: “And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah . They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.”
To be rewarded with all stars.
Ma’a as-salama.
Yahya ibn Imeel.

The writer, a catholic, engages in a journey to uncover aspects of Islam in an original yet highly insightful way. Highlighting each aspect separately, and then engaging in a dialogue about it with religious leaders, musicians, linguists, etc... what a revealing and intriguing journey this proves to be!
But the true nature of this book is perhaps not –solely- to obtain a better understanding of Islam. As the writer says so rightfully in the introduction: “the true nature of sincere dialogue above all lies in the courage to confront the self”. A lesson often forgotten by today’s intellectual elite. This book should inspire them –and anyone- to have real dialogues again, especially with people from different opinions.
It certainly inspired me, in so many ways....
A very impactful read!
