Kurzbeschreibung

Want to grow your own food, but think you don’t have enough time, energy or space? How To Grow Vegetables Without Losing Your Mind (Formerly titled Weird Gardening): will bust the myths that vegetable gardening requires tons of space, time and labor. This book, written by an experienced urban gardener, shows you step by step how to start a vegetable garden, from building rich beds to preserving your harvest. In it, you will learn: how to build a new, nutrient-rich bed from scratch at zero cost; the most effective non-chemical methods for dealing with pests; the best way to start your plants from seed; and how to use every square foot of your yard or patio to its full advantage. There is even a chapter on container gardening for readers who do not have a yard. How would you like a garden that requires little weeding, little watering, and little to no commercial fertilizer? How To Grow Vegetables Without Losing Your Mind shows you how to do all that, and much more. If you are ready to save money on groceries, get more nutrients into your diet, or simply learn to be more self-sufficient – without spending all of your precious free time on a frustrating, high-maintenance hobby – you don’t want to miss what this book has for you!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Casual gardener's inspiration 18. August 2012

This is a great guide for people who want to garden, but don't have much space, time or knowledge about gardening. The author focuses a lot on organic gardening for health and nutrition, but does not ignore the realities of pest management or the fact that some readers might not be as concerned by things like the use of plastics. She also highlights different needs for different climates, which is important to consider but is often ignored in a lot of basic gardening books. For instance, a lot of traditional methods don't work well in the desert southwest without intensive irrigation methods.

This book highlights using small plots, no tilling and companion planting methodology. How many people have read about placing plants in rows "x" inches apart, only to find themselves inundated by more zucchini than you can use within the next five years? Here, the author has you plant just what you'll need, in plots that may only be one square foot in diameter. Most people can find a corner or two that could be devoted to vegetables.

This reminds me a lot of how my grandmother would garden. Compostable material would be taken out of the kitchen and put along the garden rows so that it would fertilize the plot, and if some vegetables came up volunteer next season, that was a bonus. Water was drained from the sinks (and maybe the shower?) directly onto the hillside plot. It may have been patchwork and disorganized, but was highly productive and didn't require constant weeding.

Now, this doesn't mean that there isn't any work involved at all. This methodology does require prep work and some patience. But knowing about some old-fashioned methods that have been passed down in the family, I can see how following the advice that the author outlines would work quite well.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Practical, down-to-earth advice 2. März 2015

Written in a very personable tone, this book has all of the common-sense info I was looking for to start a garden. The author speaks from her own experience, but also gives advice for other zones as well. This laid-back approach to gardening encourages the reader to consider "What would Mother Nature do?", and thus espouses stress-free gardening. I will be starting my garden bed this year using the advice from this book!
4.0 von 5 Sternen One of the Better Gardening Books I've Read 7. Mai 2013

This is one of the better books I've read on gardening. I feel that she still misses some elements of simplification, and naturalization, but is far closer than some of the "recommended" books. SOOO good to see a book that did not start off telling you that you JUST HAVE TO DOUBLE DIG! It was an enjoyable read as well, and I'd recommend it for someone wanting to get more natural and creative in how they garden.
4.0 von 5 Sternen So many useful tips 20. Februar 2014

I have recently returned to gardening, in retirement, and found this book full of useful tips. It is chatty but practical, and although I garden in Australia, not America, it has many good ideas of universal application and is genuine value for money.
