Although there is an overall story arc to the series, there is also a strong emphasis on the „case of the week“. Actually in „Grave Ransom“ the case at hand takes main stage and the question of Alex’s powers, her future in Faerie and so on, are not really addressed at all here. Sure, she uses her powers during the case and she makes huge leaps ability-wise, but still, they're only a means to an end.
So whether the plot is a good one strongly depends on the case - and boy was that intriguing and gripping! It all starts out innocuous enough: totally unrelated to any case Alex has right now, she quite literally stumbles upon a person walking and talking and yet being totally dead. But not in a Zombie-kind of way, but nevertheless dead, yet walking. „People“ like that start appearing in other places, too, and the (human) authorities send their agent of choice for such cases, indomitable Agent Briar. If anything, I dislike her even more than at her previous appearance... but whether she wants to or not, Alex has to help Briar find out what is going on, who is the culprit and to what end - and that was very well done. I couldn't lay the book down, so engrossed was I. And the pacing, the revelations and the characters matched that fun, so „Grave Ransom“ is an overall entertaining experience.
One thing I should mention, is some development on the „relationship front“ and I use that word lightly here, because, let’ be honest, whatever she has with Death, it's not really a relationship. So I was relieved that things happen here. Of course, Falin the Winter Queen’s knight, is still around as well, still living with Alex. But the living arrangements took a turn to the much better with Alex’s castle „moving“ in a fold between worlds behind Caleb’s house. The castle is of Faerie and therefore just as huge as Alex needs it, so the awkwardness they had to suffer in Alex’s one room apartment, is gone.
Since this was another very good installment of this series, I can't wait to read on!

Alex has had some pretty big changes and challenges in her life. It was so easy to fall back into her world and become absorbed in her deliminia's, conflicts, struggles and victories.
I'm very happy to hear Kalayna Price is doing great and her life is better than ever. I'm a loyal fan and will continue to be for the long haul devouring all of her books!
Normally I get tired of a love triangle really quickly, and I just want the main character to make a choice. However, I like Death and Falin, so I can understand why Alex can't pick. Of course, Price is going to have to get off that fence pretty soon, and it will be interesting to see exactly how she does it.
Overall, I am looking forward to the next book, and I hope there are many more.
