Kurzbeschreibung

Little is what it seems to be in a leafy Savannah neighborhood as members of an afternoon cocktail and dog walking club mourn a neighbor’s death. Jealousies surface when friends vie for the widower running for mayor. An old woman with an infamous uncle plots to avenge a wrong. Memories haunt a once successful children’s writer. And a model has won the trip of a lifetime.

But a killer lurks and secrets unfold, as does a web of deceit. Is anyone really who he or she seems to be? A mysterious South American, a young Italian count, and a charitable nephew add suspicion and intrigue, as do an enigmatic organization linked to organized crime, a handsome firefighter, and three widows with hidden agendas. What’s a retired accountant’s secret, and why did a former showgirl really have plastic surgery?

The plot thickens, the Georgia temperature rises, and someone is destined for an early unmarked grave. The truth contorts to a climax that leaves readers breathless.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

The life of Duncan Whitehead, winner of the 2013 Reader’s Favorite International Book Award and Gold Medalist, is as quirky as his works. Born in 1967, he served in the Royal Navy in embassies across South America and was an amateur boxer. He worked as a purser on some of the world’s largest super yachts and visited many exotic places. He’s also an instructor of English as a foreign language, fluent in Spanish, and a children’s soccer coach.

Duncan retired to Savannah, Georgia, to pursue his passion—writing. Mindful that we all harbor secrets and inspired by the locale’s odd characters, he wrote The Gordonston Ladies Walking Club, a dark comedic mystery.

In 2011, Duncan spent six months in Brazil before settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His interests include cooking, the Israeli self-defense art of Krav Maga, and Dim-Mak, a pressure-point martial art.

He has written over two thousand comedy news articles for US and UK websites, and The Reluctant Jesus, a comedic novel set in Manhattan.

The basic idea, that a lot of people in a rather small neighbourhood decide on hiring a contract killer to get rid of someone, is cute. But there are too many flaws to the story due to incorrect (or no?) research on the facts.
Here are some examples:
- The year of the Olympics in Hitler Germany is not 1939 ( which was the beginning of WWII), but 1936.

- A German Embassy in the USA shortly before WWII ended? The author must be kidding. The two countries were at war - no way could the Nazis have smuggled Hitler's niece into the USA.

- Although a woman might show off her newly enlarged boobs a short while after the OP, having sex with a man touching and fondling her breasts would be too painful for weeks to come.

- The German word for 'a pistol' is not 'a Pistolen', but eine/a Pistole.

There are also the long and boring descriptions, for example of the clothes Cindy and Carla wear to attract Elliot's attention, which are being repeated when another character observes their stylish outfits. That's not the best way of making a book long ehough to publish.

Nothing compliments a great murder mystery like humor and gossip. In The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club, Duncan Whitehead has achieved a great mixture of these, balancing out the work throughout. There is a murderer loose in a sleepy Savannah, GA neighborhood, and everyone seems to be a suspect. With meticulous attention to detail, fun and exciting characters, and vivid scenes and description, you can't go wrong with this one. The book will appeal to readers of all kinds of genres. Look to be stumped while thoroughly entertained and laughing all the way.

I read Duncan Whitehead's The Reluctant Jesus and found his writing style to be extraordinarily talented. He has a way of injecting humor into a story that is well timed, creating a pleasant impact upon the enjoyment of the story. This book is no exception. It is evident that a master storyteller is at work. I became engaged and absorbed with this story right from the very beginning. I did not put it down until I had completed reading it in one sitting, which is quite a feat.

Fortunately, I had a free weekend, because everything else I was supposed to do simply faded away because I was so engrossed with the book that I did not notice time slipping away as if it did not exist at all! What did I like most about this book? That's a difficult question because the prose, the characters, the setting... everything about this book was absolutely fascinating... If you are looking for an entertaining and enjoyable read, this book will deliver. It is "unputdownable! Highly recommended.

This number one best seller was recommended to me by a friend who knew I would like it. After giving this book a read, I can certainly see why Duncan Whitehead has a winner here. Masterfully written with style and charm, this is an enchanting read with a great plot and a storyline that while hard to put into words, is still well executed. The premise is different and I love the setting. An engaging read that held my attention and left me wondering how much of this is really fiction. I only state that because how believable aspects are in this tale. An excellent look into human nature and one that is intriguing as in what we perceived to be real or another way of putting it, the way we view "appearances" in not being what they really are. Overall, Well done and this is one that I now can recommend. Thanks,

Ein sehr gut geschriebenen Komik-Krimi, mit vielen Wendungen, Bezug auf Realität und Psychologie. Es ist einfach zu lesen, ist aber kein Thriller.

A story filled with mystery, secrets and entertaining satire. Duncan introduces us to a small neighborhood where everyone has secrets which makes it a bit hard pinpoint who is the killers employer. "The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club" has a wide variety of unique characters that are blended together quite well with Whitehead's masterful plotting skills. This is a really good enjoyable quick read.

The reviews were so good, I decided to give this a shot. The basic idea definitely had potential, but ' in one word: ugh.

What struck me first was the repetitive, often redundant language which is something I hate on principle. Also, chapter 1 and 18 are literally identical, and sorry - that is just plain lazy. Next were the lifeless characters and their missing or just plain absurd motivations, the often clumsy, awkward descriptions and the irrelevant details which are perhaps supposed to make up for the lack of depth. You can very well just skim large parts of the text without missing anything important.

On top of all that, the story is rather predictable, and some ('historical') parts of it are simply preposterous, as are, for instance, the organization's understanding of PR, and that one Google search that starts it all - come on, really? Google might have been helpful, though, to find out the actual time difference between Georgia and France. I read that passage three times, and couldn't believe that not even the editors (if that's still a thing, and after this work - I'm sorry - I have my doubts that they do) noticed that. Along with other, overall just too many, mistakes.

So ' sadly, way too many little things that bugged me, too many questions that weren't answered, and details mentioned blatantly to add suspense that were just weirdly coincidental (but didn't have to be - like the cigarettes, for instance).
