This book read like a novel and answered some of those nagging questions we ask ourselves. I found out what I have been doing correctly and what I need to change. A woman shouldn't ride roughshod over people's feelings but she doesn't have to apologize for breathing, either!
...you won't get a chance to read. Every woman who passes will want to stop and talk about it. This is the best book for a woman working in a man's world since "Games Mother Never Taught You". Kate White's breezy and readable text, chock full of real-life examples, makes her seem like a big sister who's finally telling you the good stuff. Juicy tidbits like "No, You Absolutely Do Not Have To Act Like A Man", "The Guy Secret of Never Taking Things Personally", and "The Hollywood Starlet Trick Even You Can Use" make this one of the few non-fiction books that has ever asserted its place on the top of my "to read" pile until it was finished
Ms. White, editor of REDBOOK MAGAZINE, has written a much needed book. I consider myself a person with a spine, but in reading this book I saw that I had some "people pleaser" attitudes. This book helped me get started in getting rid of the people pleaser side of me. Of course, we still want to do nice things for others, but there are times when it is unnecessary. Ms. White uses real-life experiences to back up her statements and does it well. It usually takes time for me to get through a non-fiction book, but this one was a quicky as it kept me absorbed throughout the book.
"Gutsy Girls" has become the foundation of my career strategy. Kate White's style is very readable, laced with wit and practicality. The real-life examples illustrating her basic concepts drive home simple yet powerful points. I raced through this book and have re-read parts of it since. I'm giving copies to my sisters and several work colleagues snapped it up as well. With "Games Mother Never Taught You" as a precursor and "Hardball for Women" as a follow-up, these three books are required reading for any woman wanting to succeed in her career.
I have worked 25 years in the workforce and now make a tremendous salary. I have 50+ books in my office on management, sales, business and marketing by the leading authors of our time. This is by far, the best book of its kind (targeted to women)on the market today. I wish I had read it 25 years ago! Many women, unfortunately, feel they have to play a "game" to get ahead in business. This book gives us insight to our inner selves and helps us realize we can be true to ourselves - and still WIN in the workplace. Fabulous book!!!!
I have not only read this book several times, but I have bought it for numerous "good girls" that I have encountered in my professional career. A handy test in the first chapter will help to determine whether or not you are a good girl. White gives you a plan to break out of your people pleasing mentality. By giving lots of concrete examples from her own career, she helps to show the direct ramifications of being a good girl or conversely a gutsy girl. My favorite advice of hers is to break the rules, every day!
Being a male, I bought this book to see what the lastest strategies being used by woman to get ahead...I found myself glued to the career-saavy advice and found it to be androgenous in most respects. Since I am a part of a management team, I need to stay abreast of stratrgy and tactics being deployed. This book by far, is the best advice offered for the individual who has a day to spare (the reading) and the desire to get ahead.
Thank you Kate for writing this book. I loved it. I think mostly because I recognized myself as the "Good Girl" you wrote about. (Although I consider myself an assertive woman.) I found that I could relate to some of your stories. I recommend this to any one who needs a little guidance or assurance that your doing okay. PS. I am in sales and I found your advice applicable to my world as well. Thanks again!!! Lily
Ms. White's book offers the best model for succeeding as a woman in a still tilted-towards-men's world. Highly readable and immediately usable, any woman will be richly rewarded with ideas and practical approaches to succeeding in her career and her life. This book is not for women only. Any man who reads this book will learn more about women and how to apply the best that women have to offer to his own career.
Simply a wonderful book. It's an act of incredible generosity from a woman didn't have to write this book to all women who had hidden their gutsiness. I felt an amazing freedom and lightness of heart after I read this book. It's practical and readable (filled with appealing anecdotes that we can all relate to) and courage-inducing! Thank you so much Kate.
