Pressestimmen

I've been using R for a few years now but have never come across an introductory guide as concise and accessible as this one. I shall be recommending it to our MSc students with glowing praise! Dr Tim Fawcett, Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour (CRAB), University of Exeter The book would make the ideal text for a short course on data management and presentation - it truly packs an amazing amount of wisdom and wit between slim covers. Graeme D. Ruxton, Trends in Ecology and Evolution I was engaged by the refreshing style of the authors, that while informal, gives the user clear step-by-step instructions for using the software. Apart from the clear biological leaning of the example data, this book is applicable to anyone learning R (even a statistician!). Significance

Kurzbeschreibung

Learning how to get answers from data is an integral part of modern training in the natural, physical, social, and engineering sciences. One of the most exciting changes in data management and analysis during the last decade has been the growth of open source software. The open source statistics and programming language R has emerged as a critical component of any researcher's toolbox. Indeed, R is rapidly becoming the standard software for analyses, graphical
presentations, and programming in the biological sciences.

This book provides a functional introduction for biologists new to R. While teaching how to import, explore, graph, and analyse data, it keeps readers focused on their ultimate goals - communicating their data in oral presentations, posters, papers, and reports. It also provides a consistent method (workflow) for using R that is simple, efficient, reliable, accurate, and reproducible. The material in the book reproduces the engaging and sometimes humorous nature of the three-day course on which
it is based.

HASH(0x94d95354) von 5 Sternen Very good introduction 9. Januar 2013
Von Sarah Flanagan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book provides a very nice, basic introduction to R with accessible biological examples. You can work along with the authors, which is very nice. Having tried & somewhat failed to dabble in R with just a background of basic programming skills but nothing R-specific, this book was a perfect grounding point. Now I can approach R very logically and with the statistical mindset that I need to conduct my analyses. I would recommend this book!

I purchased this and got it in the mail yesterday, and after about only 4 hours of intermittent work, I'm halfway through the book. As an R novice, I find the most daunting task is creating a useful workflow and actually getting data into R. This book is outstanding at guiding you through these first few steps, then walking you through some basic data manipulation and analysis. If you're somewhat familiar with what data you have and what you want to do with them, but you're waiting to use R because you can't clear the initial hurdle of getting your data into R and understanding the associated lingo (console, script, object, data frame, etc.), get this book. I promise you won't be disappointed.

HASH(0x94bb4918) von 5 Sternen Very useful book for a beginner 6. Februar 2013

I had no programming experience and needed a book that would start with the very basics. This book gives a very solid introduction to using R. The tutorials are helpful and easy to follow. I believe that the book has some typos (their website has a list of corrections), but I didn't notice any in my kindle version.

Their website also has links to Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) Mirrors and provides the datasets required for the tutorials.

This is by no means a reference book, but it will get you started (and teach you to use the help files).

This is a very thoughtful introduction to R with excellent examples, sample data, and advice for analyzing biological data. Highly recommended.
HASH(0x968a11a4) von 5 Sternen Exactly what I needed to start learning R 18. Dezember 2015
Von M. Grobis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This was the perfect introduction to R for me. I read this fresh out of college (bio major) with no programming experience and being repeatedly frustrated by stumbling blocks like importing data, understanding R syntax, etc. This book was exactly what I needed.

However, note that the book is a VERY brief introduction. I finished it in two days, including working through the examples. I don't think it's worth the price for such a short introduction. This book, though, was exactly what I needed to get over the initial learning curve, and I now use R every day for PhD work.
