Expand on Wiki where it falls short
Organize information from Wiki in a little better format
More real world examples
99% of the information in this book is directly from the Wiki which he refers to in his book. I have no problem with the information being like the Wiki as the Wiki is pretty good, but it really is a bad copy of the Wiki. Nothing is organized any better, nothing is explained in more depth where the Wiki falls short. The Wiki has a lot more information that is not even covered in this book. I guess I was expecting at least something to help augment the Wiki but like I said this is not even a good copy of the it. Never been so upset at a book purchase as I am with this one, really feel robbed. But at least amazon allows for refunds.
Sorry if this is so negative but really this is just a cheat, in my opinion.
This book covers exactly nothing. Every topic is just mentioned. Some really importing statements about performance that would help to understand this database engine better are not explained.
The crucial topic how to import big chunks of data efficiently into the database is not covered.
After reading this book i learned nothing. Even reading the api and some code examples in the orient goole group a more helpfull.
OrientDB's documentation is available through a wiki and sometimes it's hard to find the right information.
The book starts with a complete installation guide that covers all the flavors of OrientDB on Linux and Windows. By the end of the chapter the reader will have Orient installed and running on his system ready to play.
The second chapter is an administration guide. You will learn how to configure OrientDB editing configurations files or by the Studio web interface. The chapters covers security configuration covering users, roles and record-level security.
The third chapter is a programming guide. From creating a record and deleting it using the console, the chapter will guide through all the apis that Orient offers to the developer: document dB, graph DB, rest interface, JDBC driver.
The chapter on performance covers in detail how to configure the JVM and orient's caches. There are also tips on transactions, indexes, massive insertion.
The final chapter covers advanced Orient features. Orient could be embedded in your applications, but can also be clustered. All you need to know about these, and others features, is in this chapter.
I think this little book is more than a getting started guide. It covers all you need to know about Orient and it is easy to find the information you're looking for. When I work with orient I keep a copy of the book opened on my desktop.
