RC has taken that online course and translated it into a book that does exactly what my friends need. It provides a foundation for creative people to build their own website and customize it without spending a bundle of money. Using WordPress CMS as a foundation, RC explains how to configure it, dress it up with a great theme from recommended designers, get your galleries online, and include commerce to sell prints or designs with a plugin that takes the order and sends it to a service for fulfillment, and more.
When I first opened this book, I appreciated that RC got right into the meat of the subject. There was no long preamble, just solid information to get you started right away. He provides clear examples with plenty of screen shots and photos to illustrate what you will see online as he guides you through setting up your accounts and web site.
No book is going to be all things to all people, and that's not his intent. He doesn't spend a lot of time reviewing a lot of web hosts or other providers that may change over time. Instead, he gives you criteria you should consider when selecting your vendors, and then he chooses one to use in his examples. You don't have to use the same providers, but that's OK. The providers he uses are good, but understanding what to look for in a provider helps you have the confidence to choose the right provider for your needs.
Once you go through the examples and setup your own site, you have a base of knowledge that allows you to explore the rich world of Wordpress plugins & themes to further customize your site. RC gives you the foundation, but you build the site without having to spend a lot of money or know how to write a bunch of code. It's a great guide that puts the pieces in place for you.
Author highly recommends Go Daddy, which is the worlds largest domain registrar, as your web hosting company. As he states do some research. I did. Go Daddy's price was mid to high for domain names and web services than other sites. Today it's .99 even to transfer your domain name. My research found that Go Daddy has some serious problems with their servers since Sept of last year. Some info said several bad servers which should have been resolved by now. Some say Hackers, anyway, customers are still having problems. See Go Daddy.com Support under forum and/or blog. Some hardcore feminists groups wanting their sleazy portrayal of women in commercial banned to PETA complaint about the CEO Bob Parson's (now former CEO) video of killing a African elephant.
RC is an excellent instructor with Kelby Training.com. I've taken his online training courses, one day his Seminars. Overall RC is excellent in his details and gives you several photo imaging software options to improve your images before you display them on the web. Also valuable info regarding metadata, watermarks, copyright and Wordpress.
Highly recommend this book and RC online training, along with other instructor from Kelby training.
It's a no brainer! A young 13 year old kid recommend this book to me and I am so happy he did. Just reading the introduction had me hook. It took me through the entire process of setting up a website (domain and hosting), picking a name, sorting through images and getting it ready to showcase online.
There were enough examples of what to do, what not to do and why. I didn't know there were so many ways to resize, add tags and keywords, sharpening, and color spacing for a photo. This book is on my iPad and screen after screen, it's full with photoshop steps, pictures, and website that you could check out for futher info!
I love this book! It's a must have for serious photographers who needs a website and a online present/portfolio!
This book takes you through the process of setting up a website, editing and uploading your photos, getting started with a blog, how to order prints, and how to order prints online. Sure, there are other books that can teach you all of this stuff, but not one book that covered all of this in a single title. Until this book came out...
RC is a talented instructor, and his teaching style comes out in this book through the detailed (yet simple) examples in each chapter. The step-by-step method he uses in this book practically guarantee that you will be successful when you try it yourself. His writing style also makes this an easy read, and I had no problem skimming over sections that I was already very familiar with. And now that I've finished the book, I will definitely keep it close by as a reference guide.
I've already taken many of the lessons I've learned from this book and started to apply them. While I already had a good background in photo editing, setting up a website and Wordpress blog were new to me. I'm fairly confident that I will have my own site up and running very soon, with time being the only factor in my way right now. Thanks to RC, after reading this book, all of the technical hurdles have been removed.
