BearManor Media presents "GEORGE RAFT:THE MAN WHO WOULD BE BOGART" (Paperback), by Stone Wallace (Author) with a foreword by Alan K. Rode.

Before I started reviewing this book, must make mention of the beautiful graphic cover featuring Mr. Raft in a tailor-made pin-striped suit, which depicts the man we all loved to watch on the big screen. The author Wallace states, perhaps more than any other star of his era, George strongly was identified with his film roles. It was important to him that he be liked as much on the camera as off. To that end, when he reached the point of stardom where he could start being selective about the material he'd chose, he often exercised a judgment that was ... eccentric, to say the least. Rejecting "The Maltese Falcon" and "High Sierra", Raft's career would never recover from these mistakes.

Loaded with wonderful studio stills and unique photographs, which is a plus for my taste.

Interesting section on Betty Grable Hollywood's soon to be World War 2 "Pin Up Girl", she was 24 years old and beautiful, just divorced from the child actor Jackie Coogan. Both her and George had genuine liking in the same interests, she was fun and outgoing and enjoyed going to Sunday ballgames. Loved the nightclubs where neither of them drank (except fruits juice drinks or ice cream sodas) but would dance for hours. One of the reasons Betty fell so hard for George was his constant thoughtfulness and consideration. But there would never be wedding bells for them.

Mr. Wallace has fitted very nicely in his book, the situation with George's career decisions. But for better or worse, like many of the characters he created on film he played the game his way. In this one cannot help but respect his decisions.

4.0 von 5 Sternen By George! 19. Oktober 2016

I knew very little about George Raft and have liked him in several films. Not a great actor but a pretty compelling movie star. This is the best book out there and I enjoyed it very much. Plus it puts to rest the oft told tale of his turning down Casablanca. He may have passed on The Maltese Falcon and a few other good films but not this classic. Plus there are a lot of personal comments about Raft from many women. Apparently whatever his mob connections etc he was quite the gentleman. Almost everyone seems to have liked him a lot. A good read on a actor few know about anymore. I still think his best film is the 1946 noir Nocturne. Not only does he have the great Lynn Bari as co-star but he is so good. The scenes with his on screen mother are really well done. This film deserves much more recognition.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Stone Wallace's Biography of George Raft is SUPERB!! 13. April 2008
Von Johnnery - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
In his stunning and beautifully packaged new book on the slam-bang and rugged life and career of movie tough guy George Raft, author Stone Wallace proves once and for all that he is at the absolute forefront of contemporary celebrity biographers. A veteran author of over a dozen fictional and non-fictional books, including his recent crime novel, The Shaft, Stone hits the ball out of the park completely with this latest project, bringing out all the many nuances, vulnerabilities and strengths, and most of all, HUMANITY, in Raft's character that the actor himself could have ever hoped to reveal.

A complex and deeply insecure man whose loyal and overly generous nature often backfired on him, George Raft was as memorable a film personality as they come and more than deserves his decades-long status as a true celluloid icon. And yet it is discovery of the man's heart, and who he was as a friend to the many colorful people in his orbit, that is most appealing to me, and the part of Stone's research that impresses me the most. Stone has captured both Raft's personal and professional lives with equal precision, and proves that he is, without a doubt, the world's foremost expert on the life of George Raft.

Here's hoping that TCM decides to run a full-out George Raft Film Festival in the very near future, to help promote Stone's fine work with this book. It would be a terrific collaboration and a fitting tribute to both George AND Stone.

Bravo to this brilliant author and to BearManor Media for the exquisite book cover it has designed for what I am certain will soon be deemed a modern day classic in celebrity biographies.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Okay, but nothing very new here 11. Februar 2009

Having read Lewis Yablonsky's and James Robert Parish's fine biographies of Raft, and having written my own biographical piece on Raft for Films in Review magazine back in the '80s, I was very interested in this new book, hoping that it would reveal more detail than had been available in prior works. I would say that the material about Raft's life after the publication dates of those other books is very interesting and revealing, but that virtually nothing up to that period seems very new or unusually illustrative at all. For the period of Raft's life covered by those earlier books, this one seems a rehash, with very little I didn't already know. I found the typos and poor grammar (lots of sentence fragments) annoying. But the final section, dealing with Raft's declining years following the period covered by the earlier books, was touching and intriguing. I'm not sure how much of that is due to the author rather than the facts of Raft's life, but judging by the lack of ground-breaking material before that section, I'm guessing the latter. A very good book for anyone who hasn't read a book on Raft, but only the last chapter or so will provide new information for someone who has.
5.0 von 5 Sternen An Excellent Biography 9. August 2016

Stone Wallace has written one of the most entertaining show business biographies that I have read in some time.

His writing is lean, not filled with redundant quotes and film synopses that sink so many books of this ilk. He tells Raft's story and he tells it well.

Near the end of his life, when I knew him, Raft was a tragic figure, yet his misfortunes were really of his own making. I found him to be a nice, soft-spoken man, though not the sharpest knife in the drawer. There was no way that you could not feel sorry for this once major star and his plight.

I really liked this book.
