The first thing I noticed was when the app finished scanning FM stations it did not bring in the station information or logos. Everything came is as "unknown". Ok, not a huge deal. I pulled up a station list for the SF Bay Area and manually added the info. Everything looked good. Connected the phone to the clock again and most of the info was deleted. The first four stations in the list retained the call letters, but not the descriptive info (rock, oldies, etc.). The remaining stations reverted to "unknown." Tried it a few times with the same result (you know what they say about that!). Gave up on trying.
Went to bed that night and docked my phone. The display was ridiculously bright, so opened the app to use the dimmer. The dimmer slide came up and I tried to adjust the brightness. No matter how much I moved the slider, there was no difference in the display. It remained at full brightness. Again, I tried it multiple times without any luck and gave up (I'm shocked that the clock itself does not have a dimmer to adjust the brightness).
Usually, when I charge my phone I plug it in and turn it off, which is what I did when turning in. Just my personal preference. You cannot do that with this clock. If you put your phone in the dock then turn it off, it will turn itself back on in a few seconds. There is no way to power off the phone when it is docked. Not a big deal, but again, my personal preference.
After all of this a very strange thing happened. I went into the app and changed the time display from text (dumb way to display time) and changed to digital. The time was incorrect (sometimes it appears to be 24 hour time, sometimes just wrong), even though the analogue, text and flip time displays were correct. Didn't seem to impact the time display on the clock, so I ignored it.
Finally, the power button on the clock can be a minor problem. If you hit it (very easy to do given where it is), it instantly shuts down the clock entirely as I found out after our house cleaners left. Had to go through the setup process again.
I just advised Amazon I wanted to return the clock and am waiting for a response. Very disappointing.
Pros: Nice looking, speakers sound very good for a clock radio.
Cons: App is terrible/full of bugs, no separate dimmer on the clock itself (and dimmer in app doesn't seem to work), a little bigger than it appears from the pictures.
Gear4, the U.K.-based brand behind Apple accessories such as AlarmDock Halo 2 and Renew SleepClock, has gone bankrupt and cut most of its U.K. workforce, but has effectively been re-formed as a new entity in Hong Kong. Disruptive Hong Kong bought the rights of all designs, brands, and intellectual property from Disruptive Ltd -- the company behind the Gear4 branding -- and the company is relocating its headquarters. Disruptive founder and CEO Tom Dudderidge said the economic climate forced the company to review its operations, including "product development, business model and location." According to the company, all U.K. customer warranties will be honored, and the company will retain a small number of sales and marketing workers in the U.K.
The SoundHive Connect application is still not available in the iTunes store. However as noted below I have a developer application from gear4.
The communication between the dock and the SoundHive Connect app. however is now having issues. When the alarm goes off, the radio is either very loud (jolting you awake) or very low - it should gradually increase in volume.
Then the app. shows the radio station as 92.3 FM and sets the alarm off, and after a few seconds the dock changes the station to 92.1 FM which is just static. So, when the alarm is very loud the dock jolts you awake and then changes to static. When it is very low, you just awaken to low static.
Since the alarm portion of the "Enhanced Alarm Clock/Dock" is the main reason for the clock/dock to begin with - this issue is pretty major. The snooze button is also not reliable, even when the alarm has been turned off snooze shows on the dock's screen.
At first the product (after receiving the app) was 5 stars - but now since it no longer functions as a reliable alarm clock, I am revising my rating of the Halo 3 App Enhanced Alarm Clock/Dock to 2 stars.
On 04/11 gear4 sent me a link to the developer SoundHive Connect application - which is currently still not available at the iTunes store. The link is specific to my phone's UDID number.
The app does make the product more useful and enjoyable. The app itself, even without the AlarmDock Halo 3, although it doesn't have a lot of functionality, might be a good app to have. When combined with the AlarmDock, the app allows for much easier programming of the dock alarm and offers a display of a clock in one of 4 different ways (redundant as the dock itself has a clock), the "weather", and the "next alarm", or when you tap on the "next alarm" or the "weather" a set alarm or weather details page. The app also allows for FM radio station scanning and setting as a choice for the alarm. Other selectable sources for the alarm - or just to listen to - include iPod, Spotify, and your own network music.
Spotify is free, Spotify Premium is free for the first 48 hours and there are other subscription options. The app is a "radio" type app similar to Pandora which is available only in the US, however Spotify, based in London, is available in the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Germany, France and Australia.
gear4 has been a pleasure to deal with so far, and according to them - I have one of the first 10 AlarmDock Halo 3's in the USA. The SoundHive app is awaiting approval by the iTunes store before it will be universally available.
I am thoroughly happy with my gear4 AlarmDock Halo 3, and even though I have to take off my Otterbox case to dock my iPhone 5, it is worth the extra effort.
The product itself seems great.
But the App-Enhanced part doesn't work as the App - SoundHive Connect is not available in the iTunes store. So... right now it is just a glorified alarm clock. I have put in an email to gear4 and am awaiting their response. The clock/dock is 8 pin for the iPhone 5, but it like almost every other accessory for any Apple ianything it won't work with the Otterbox Commuter Case - so it is much easier to just plug the iPhone in using the Cooper Wiring Devices TR7740W-K Combination USB Charger with Tamper Resistant Receptacle (purchased from Amazon) with the regular iPhone lightning cable.
I am somewhat disappointed right now and hope to be able to update this review in a more positive manner when/if the App has been released, although I am not convinced it will be worth fighting with the Otterbox Case every time I want to dock my iPhone 5.
--On the gear4 website it does say to use the SmartLink App, but the AlarmDock doesn't recognize it - and the instructions that come with the AlarmDock have an insert that states to use the SoundHive Connect App; and the AlarmDock even tries to send you to the iTunes Store for it - but it is just not there.
I have until May the 5th to return this item to AMAZON within the 30 day return policy and not inccur the 20% penalty after the 30 days...I dont really want to return it but I am not hearing anything from GEAR4 or the app developer Soundhive about fixing the bugs that this device actually has...it doesn't always communicate properly with the alarm and the snooze and its very frustrating to get to a playlist on my iphone because its located under songs and when I press on sources in the top left corner it doesnt respond to my touch...and it takes at least 4 times before it will finally come up? HELP!!!!! I really like the craftsmanship of the device but I must send this back if there are NO updates to the soundhive app...I also have to remove my case in order for the device to sync and charge appropiately....
Very much would appreciate some help wiht my device....
