Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-known proponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (The somewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe.") But this book is also a terrific introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients have either improved their health or simply come to feel better despite their illness by using these techniques, but these meditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlook on life. I read this book eight years ago and I found it to be so valuable that I read it again two years later. To this day, I continue to reference certain chapters from time to time and eight years after first reading it, I continue to practice the techniques I learned from the book.
Grounded in scientific research, Jon Kabat-Zinn explores the connections between mind and body to the point where there is no longer any obvious division between the two. This book offers the reader access to a new way of living that is rooted in mindfulness. The instructions offered are easy to understand. This book is primarily intended for those facing chronic or terminal illness or emotional pain, but it can really benefit a far more general audience - those who want to live their lives more fully.

Excellent book about mindfulness based stress reduction by Jon Kabat-Zinn. H gives a detailed description about what happens in the classical 8 week MBSR program so that the reader can learn MBSR without actually participating in such a course.

I have had this book for a couple of weeks. It is quite substancial content wise - you read a page, sometimes a sentence only, and than think about it for long time.
If you have a problem, may it be of physical or psychological nature, pain, illnes, stress, whatever - read this book. It certainly won't cure your problem, but it surely will teach you how to cope with it. Using regularly the simple excercises, whatching your reactions, thoughts, will gradually change the way you see yourself and your life - with all the good and bad that goes with it.
Written by a medical doctor, this book is based on firm scientifical evidences, if you are after new age esotheric miracles, you will have to look elsewhere.
The most important I have learned from it is: how you cope with your problems, depends basically on the way you percieve them. This book shows you how you can change the way you see your problems, and how you can work with them. Needless to say, problem solving is your job, but you are given powerful tools to use, you do not feel helpless anymore.
You can order a four CD set, that pases perfectly to the book. The CDs contain each a 45 minutes guided meditation, yoga excercises, sitting meditation and body scan meditation. They proved very useful to me.

I have to admit, I bought the book because I liked the title. And really, it is not a bad book for total beginners, people who are completely new to meditation and who maybe have apprehensions about such an 'esoteric' practice. Kabat-Zinn is a medical doctor, so his every day experience which he relates in the book is very much based on the people that come to his stress clinic. It is good to know that meditation is finding its way into mainstream medical practice and that it is helping people overcome their physical, mental and emotional problems - or at least enable them to cope with them better. I found it a bit repetitive after a while and sometimes it sounded a bit like a sales pitch for his stress clinic. Still, I would recommend it to sceptics who are in need of making significant changes in their lives in order to better deal with whatever stress life throws at them.

A remarkable, accessible, entertaining and enlightening work on mindfulness meditation (Zen). Chapter 2 describing 7 attitudinal factors (non-judging, patience, beginner's mind, trust, non-striving, acceptance and letting go) is key and indispensible to development of mindfulness meditation technique. I frequently recommend it to patients in my neurology and headache clinic. It can open up a whole new outlook on life for anyone
