Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

USA Today Bestselling Author Ava Miles burst onto the contemporary romance scene after receiving Nora Roberts’ blessing for her use of Ms. Roberts’ name in her debut novel, the #1 National Bestseller NORA ROBERTS LAND, which kicked off her small town series, Dare Valley, and brought praise from reviewers and readers alike. Ava has also released a connected series called Dare River, set outside the country music capital of Nashville. She’s fast becoming a favorite author in light contemporary romance (Tome Tender) and is known for funny, emotional stories about family and empowerment. Ava’s background is as diverse as her characters. She’s a former chef, worked as a long-time conflict expert rebuilding warzones, and now writes full-time from her own small town community.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Very different from the first book, and not in a good way 28. Oktober 2014

I really enjoyed Nora Roberts Land, and although at times I found Jill's extreme hostility towards Brian extreme, I still liked the book enough that I wanted to continue reading their story in French Roast. I really wish I hadn't.

While it can be enjoyable to dive into characters who have that "we're at each other's throats yet we can't fight our passion for each other" story line, Jill and Brian just flat-out have a very dysfunctional relationship. Jill is supposed to be this savvy, competent and confident business woman, yet she acts like a 12 year old in the emotional department where Brian is concerned. I was actually cringing for her during several parts of the book. I still don't understand WHY she was in love with Brian, other than the fact that she had been "in love" with him since she was in kindergarten? Really? And Brian is one of the most unlikable major characters I've come across in a long time. He was supposed to have emotional wounds because his jerk dad and classmates thought his love for cooking was gay in high school? COME ON. Since when is a cooking/chef profession looked on as gay, even 10+ years ago? It would have made more sense if the dad was just an abusive alcoholic lacking any redeemable father qualities. So that was the depth of Brian's character, and he just came off as immature, self-absorbed, self-centered, and was almost toying with Jill's emotions at times.

Their "love story" played out like a bad teen drama. They had real issues they needed to work out, yet decided to completely and deliberately NOT discuss those issues so they could what...just have a ton of hot sex? Because jumping into a sexual relationship when it's already dysfunctional and in turmoil always solves problems *rolls eyes*.

The relationship they had was confusing to me on why they were trying so hard to make it work with each other. It got to the point to where I actually wanted them to just break up for good, because there was never a good argument for why they really belonged together. I like rooting for my characters, and although at times you want to shake them for being stubborn/blind/hard headed, etc., it's always so rewarding to cheer them on and see them live happily ever after. Not in in this case. They both have an epiphany on a major belief pattern they've been carrying around forever and suddenly *poof* all their issues are solved? Puh-leeeze. And I won't even get into the ridiculousness of the surprise Jill gets at the end of the book.

As for Peg and Mac, based on the set up we've already gotten in this book, I don't have high hopes I will enjoy the next book in the series. Peg is so out of touch with the "woman" in her, she came off as almost a stereotypical butch lesbian. It's almost absurd to believe that a drop-dead gorgeous, charismatic man like Mac would somehow see all these layers to Peg and immediately be interested in her, especially when she was at her absolute worst. She was just so rude to everyone throughout most of the book, it didn't make any sense that Jill was all girly-girl BFF chatty with her. Although I enjoyed her when she was in mom mode with Keith, I don't have much interest in seeing her story unfold.

Overall, I felt this book really strayed from the continuity and development of the first book, and obviously was quite disappointed by it. Maybe future books will be more entertaining.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Best to bypass this book 9. September 2014

Even though the first book Nora Roberts Land was not my favorite, I was really hoping the writing would improve and I was curious to what happened between Jill and Brian (or is it Bryan?!). I am not a fan of this book. Like one of the other reviewers stated, it really is like a novel for teenage girls. The writing is so remedial and immature. Did anyone else notice the vacillation of one of the characters name of Simca and Simone? Or Brian versus Bryan? Is Ms. Miles aware there are other parts of grammar that are not metaphors or similes? If I were to read one more "like....." I was prepared to literally scream out loud! As much as I would love to find out what happens with Peggy and Mac, I cannot in good conscience invest in purchasing the next installment. Perhaps it should be DULL Valley Book 2 and not Dare Valley.

This was an absolutely awful book!!!

Jill had so much potential in this book and the author dropped the ball. Jill was supposed to be a strong, willful, free-spirit. By the end of the book, I was so disgusted with her antics, I didn't care if it turned out for her or not! She was such a disappointment for me!

Brian on the other hand was an idiot. To keep making the same mistake over and over, please! I get that in these types of stories the man is supposed to be "in the dark", but not this bad! Whenever the family would have a conversation it was always pointless and never amounted to anything.

Let's not forget Simca...the author brought in this "twist", then once again dropped the ball. This character appeared as if the author forgot about her and then threw her into a scene in a very clumsy and ineffectual manner. For a "femme fatal" she had all the looks and style needed, but was so passive as to be a worthless addition to this story. She wasn't even bad or mean enough to hate! I couldn't even summon up a small amount of frustration over her actions. She was unnecessary in this book, Jill and Brian were so stupid all by themselves!

I must also take exception to the Hale family. I understand that it is essential to be unbiased when you're a reporter. However, that doesn't translate into everyday life with your family! You can take a stand when it comes to family without compromising your ethics! But, this author felt the need to silence the outspoken Hale family when it came to Jill and Brian! How inaccurate for this family!

The author also seemed more interested in setting up the characters for the next book more than she was interested in writing this book! The main story of Brian and Jill took backseat to the sub plot of Peggy and Mac. So I can only surmise that this will also happen in the next book! Unfortunately the author did not provide enough interest for me to find out anything further, unless the third book is offered for free.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Great read and very different from the first book 9. Juli 2017

Ava takes the two main characters on quite an emotional ride while they decide if their relationship is worth saving. She is such an excellent writer that the journey is totally believable. It was very refreshing to read a story that wasn't all sunshine and lollipops from the beginning. I mean really, who has a relationship that is all sunshine. Not anyone I know. But her depiction of Jill and Brian's relationship seemed really realistic.

I know this book is very different than the first one but I don't agree that it only deserves one or two stars. It's just a more realistic style of romance writing. Kind of refreshing from all the sweetness in some books. The first book had the mystery at the end to cut the sweet, so to speak. This second book just went for more realism. It showed another facet of the author's writing style.

Her description of the restaurant world also seemed spot on. You just don't steal another chef's recipes. And there are more than enough times and ways to argue with your partner, you need to at least agree on the basics.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to what she will do in the next book of the series. Try her as an author. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Reads like a romance novel written for pre-teens... 30. Juli 2014
Von allipr - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I LOVED the first book in this series. but I think I would have been better off stopping there.

I'm sorry. I wanted to get through this. I wanted to like Jillie, but I'm just too old for this, I think. It reads like a pre-teen novel. Not because the writing is horrible, but because the protagonist is about as mentally developed as a high school freshman. it got annoying. I'm only about 30% through and I have to stop. In the first book, Jill comes off as eccentric, but overall responsible with a good head on her shoulders. She's a businesswoman. She started a successful coffee shop from the ground up.

Unfortunately, in this book she comes across as naive, inexperienced, and she flip flops between her being business savvy and being a horny teenager to the detriment of her business plans. And not in a lose-yourself-to-adult-passion kind of way. She's just like a sad puppy in love. I found myself constantly having to remind myself that she wasnt in high school, and that she was a college educated adult and at least 21 yrs old. For someone to have loved someone since kindergarten and be holding onto that same love as if they're equivalent, as if the persons involved haven't changed... it's just kind of pathetic and immature. Maybe it gets better, I don't know, but I don't plan on finishing it. I don't even like this Jill, so I definitely can't root for her.

It also didn't quite make sense to me how soon things got hot and heavy... or how childishly the characters went about their intimate moments. I'm NOT one of those people who reads a romance novel, then complains because there's (gasp!) sex in it or foul language. But I'd like for the romance to be presented in a more adult way. I know they had history and it's not like they're strangers, BUT so little of their lingering questions had been resolved, and yet... Well I won't spoil things, but I'll just say I prefer a bit more relationship and character build up. Things just start to happen too easily and without the right amount of questioning/discussion.

I'll summarize by saying: it felt like i was reading a judy blume novel... sorry.
