Kurzbeschreibung

When your mind is a weapon, freedom comes at a price.
Four months have passed since Kira left home to join Julian's Jacker Freedom Alliance, but the hole in her heart still whistles empty where her boyfriend Raf used to be. She fills it with weapons training, JFA patrols, and an obsessive hunt for FBI agent Kestrel, ignoring Julian's worries about her safety and repeated attempts to recruit her for his revolutionary chat-casts. When anti-jacker politician Vellus surrounds Jackertown with the National Guard, Kira discovers there's more to Julian's concerns than she knew, but she's forced to take on a mission that neither want and that might be her last: assassinating Senator Vellus before he can snuff out Julian's revolution and the jackers she's come to love.

Free Souls is the third novel in the Mindjack Saga, a young adult science fiction series. There are three novels in the original trilogy, five novellas that accompany the series, and plans for another trilogy in the works (see Susan’s latest novella, The Locksmith, for a peek at a new Mindjack character for the coming trilogy).

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times. She left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees (B.S. Aerospace Engineering, M.S. Mechanical Engineering, Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering) and work everywhere from NASA to NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) to a little Venice Beach restaurant called The Green Bean (she was the bookkeeper). She has designed aircraft engines, studied global warming, and held elected office (as a school board member). Now that she writes novels, her business card says "Rocket Scientist and Author," and she doesn't have to sneak her notes anymore. Which is too bad. All that engineering comes in handy when dreaming up dystopian future worlds or mixing science with fantasy to conjure slightly plausible inventions. For her stories, of course. Just ignore that stuff in the basement. Her middle grade boys clamor for more middle grade books with magic and gadgets and less teen novels with kissing. Unfortunately for them, she enjoys writing both. Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as much as she can handle. Sehr gelungenes Finale der Mindjack Serie.
Die Handlung nimmt viele für mich nicht vorhersehbare Wendungen, ist spannend bis zur letzten Seite.
Sehr lesenswert!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Sad to say I did not like it.....The ending was abrupt 29. Dezember 2012

**This review will contain spoilers**

I hate to be the first bad review on this book because I am very much in love with this series.

-My main problem with this story is the ending. I just could not get over the fact that there are powerful mindjackers popping up all over the country and everybody is just like "Ok sure it is no big deal! we'll just deal with it as long as we are together." It feels as though the ending was rushed and just put together as a way to end the series without going into too much depth. Heck with all the information thrown at us toward the last chapters, I'm pretty sure it could have been enough for another book!

-Also I didn't see the point in showing that the Senator actually has the mindjackers in his best interest and then kills him off without him actually doing anything important!

-I could get over the fact that Kira seems to be able to get out of every life and death situation or even the fact that she is such a powerful mindjacker yet she gets thrown out of peoples heads like she is a changeling. But I cannot get over this ending. It was just the showdown at the water treatment facility and then BAM fast forward, everyone is turning into mindjackers and they are just going to "deal with it", Jacker town is becoming an independent state, Raf was so important in the first two books and we never really get closer with him and everyone is just dandy.

Nevertheless I love the series. I'm sad that this is the end. I can still remember Kira in high school with dreams of becoming a doctor, the time when she escaped the facility in the middle of nowhere, or even the broadcast of her with the changelings that started the chain of events. I hope there are more side stories to come!

This is by far the best book of the trilogy and the whole series has been a series of awesome scenes, one chapter after another. This book is filled with nail bitting moments, with drama and with times when I just had to put down the book so that I can regain my composure to then retake it a few seconds later to be able to absolutely learn what was comming up next. A true success and I strongly recomment do all to get this trilogy because believe me, it is far worth your every penny you will invest in it!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't Put It Down 14. Dezember 2012

Of the entire series, I enjoyed this one the most. It was the perfect conclusion to the trilogy. Kira's struggles and growth were very well-written. I thought what she did near the end was true to her character, even though it might not be what everyone else thought she should have done. The action scenes were especially great. I really liked Kira's new "superspeed" and, what made it even better, is that there was a logical consequence of her using it. She didn't just become some super hero. Julian was amazing and I loved the dynamic that developed between he and Kira. I would still like to know what was on the cast Kira taped for him before she left on the mission. There wasn't much Raf in this book, but his scenes were perfect and I'm glad the author didn't just gloss over and give him some fairy tale ending.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best yet! 16. Oktober 2014

The only bad thing that I can say about these books is that there aren't more of them. With characters you fall in love with, a thrilling and suspenseful story, and face paced action, Free Souls may be the best of them all. And that's saying something because every one of these books are amazing, right down to the novella companion stories. Hats off Susan Kaye Quinn, you've made it into my list of favorite authors with this mind blowing trilogy. 5 BIG stars.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Great End to the Mindjack Trilogy!! 28. Januar 2014

Funny thing about me and the last book in a series- I put off reading it as long as I can. If I like the series that is. And I really, really like this series. But when the author gives you the book and says "Here's the last book in the series!" it kind of eats at your conscience. But it still took me four or five months to be ready to let go of these characters. But Kira, Kira was left not with a broken heart, but with a heart with gaping holes in it. The wind whistles through her it's so torn open and I couldn't live knowing this about Kira, the heroine of the story. So I needed to know that Sue didn't leave Kira gaping open, that if she didn't find a way to mend those holes inside her heart, that at least she could kill that evil man that was the cause of all her troubles from book one. I had to find out where she went after she picked herself up and dusted herself off.

She fought on. Kira didn't give in to selfish wallowing in pity. She chose revenge. And that girl has a mind that can wreak havoc on a person's mind if she can get around your helmet. She's one of the strongest mind jackers around and she looks so innocent. But she could get your heart to stop beating if she wanted to. And her target is a big fish in the ocean. No, not the president, but someone fairly big. Things move really fast in this novel and you have to have read everything before this to be able to keep up. You need to know what each person's talents are so you can understand how everyone works together. For a revolution, there is very little bloodshed. The JFA use dart guns to tranquilize everyone then mind control them. It's easier and scares people less than killing everyone.

The world building the author has done throughout this series is phenomenal. Everyone is a mind reader. Except there are some anomalies. Kira and her mindjacker friends who can actually link into people's brains and control there thoughts, wipe their memories, kill them, completely block their own minds from being read, and other various and really cool things. Kira can hack into computers with her mind and control them. She can hack into her own body and control it's bodily functions, revving up the adrenaline when needed. And why these anomalies, why the mind readers? Dumping of pharmaceuticals in the water supply. Simple, very believable and drugs affect people differently. You'll see even more of that in this novel. The mindjackers live in an rundown industrial building with old houses surrounding them, "Jackertown." I swear to you if I were an artist I could draw the inside of that building they live in I can picture it so well. That's not to say the books are weighed down with heavy descriptions, they aren't. But the characters move through the space so much and live there, I can picture it. Wonder if my picture and the author's would match?

Free Souls is an edge of your seat suspense filled finale. Kira has proven that she's not afraid to take a bullet or to die. She's put herself in harms way more than once or twice. She actually doesn't expect to come back from some missions and after the end of the last novel, Closed Hearts, I wasn't sure she wanted to live. But Kira is tough, all the soft naive edges rubbed away in this novel and despite some self doubt, Kira shows herself as a true leader in this book. It was such a great ending though I wish the author had stuck it to Raf a little more just because...but he has to live with Mama Santos. So there is that!

So who is The Mindjack Trilogy for? Sci-fi lovers, though it's pretty low-tech there are some neat stuff and lingo. It's not really dystopian, but the world is definitely not in great shape. It's set in the future with a lot of technology. There is some romance, a few as there are several characters that play important roles. I'd say plot drives this novel. Kira is really the driving force as far as characters go, but the plot is what moves everything forward at such a quick pace. Family plays a big part in this series, most everything Kira does is to protect her family or help them. It's a very clean series with some violence mainly in the form of hand to hand combat.
