HASH(0x9168cfb4) von 5 Sternen Unique approach to writing prompts 21. Januar 2014
Von Laura Roberts - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
With its unique approach to writer's block, Four Seasons of Creative Writing categorizes each of its prompts by season, rather than by subject.

Under each season you'll find straightforward prompts asking you to ponder what might happen because of the weather, as well as facts and trivia about events that have taken place during each season. (For example, there are lots of winter festivals dedicated to celebrating ice and snow mentioned.) You'll also find literary prompts that tie into the seasonal theme, from the "summer of youth" to the "winter of our discontent."

While I was expecting prompts more along the lines of a visualization exercise or lists of items for the writer to include in their piece, this approach with open-ended questions offers something a little different. As some other reviewers have suggested, many of the prompts are aimed at school-age writers, but even older writers looking to break out of their comfort zones can benefit from thinking seasonally for a change.

Recommended for anyone struggling with a blank page, in need of some spring, summer, winter or fall motivation to get that pen moving.

HASH(0x9168e024) von 5 Sternen Interesting set of writing prompts! 31. Januar 2014
Von Kelly Boyer Sagert - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
I like how the author has arranged the prompts by season; I've never seen it done that way before. I also like how the prompts are arranged in categories within these seasons. This book seems perfect for use at a writer's conference to get the participants warmed up and ready to talk about writing.

HASH(0x9168e45c) von 5 Sternen Banish the Block Forever 10. Januar 2014
Von Charles Ray - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
Have you ever sat down to write and found yourself staring at a blank screen – with a blank mind? At some point in our lives all of us who write have been faced with at least a moment in time when we were at a loss for something to write about.
Well, that never need happen to you again. I recently received a free review copy of a book that is guaranteed to fill in those blank spaces in your mind and have your writing machine humming at top speed any time, day or night. Four Seasons of Creative Writing: 1,000 Prompts to Stop Writer’s Block by Bryan Cohen comes four years after his popular 1,000 Creative Writing Prompts. Seasons is as the name implies, a series of prompts tied to the four seasons of the year, beginning strangely enough with summer. It is further subdivided into headings like Weather and Nature or Sports, and is a series of questions designed to jump start your creative writing muscles.
The real value in this book is that it should also stimulate you to come up with your own specific questions or thoughts, so it, in effect, is many more than a mere thousand prompts (by the way, Cohen doesn’t number his prompts from 1 to 1,000, but separately under each subhead, so I’m taking his word that the book contains that promised thousand). If you want to forever banish the fear of writer’s block from your mind, this is the book you should have right next to your computer – or, if you’re really old-fashioned, your typewriter.

HASH(0x9168e828) von 5 Sternen Great prompts for any time of writers block 16. Januar 2014
Von J. C. Manthorpe - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
I received this book free in return for a review.
This is a great book for getting your creative juices rolling. Its give a list of different questions to ponder over in different categories,
like for instance in the Nature, Activities and Events section, there are questions for weather, nature sports, events and then a mixed bag of questions. There many other categories too many to list here.

I gave the book 4 stars since the formatting is not good and it looks like it was thrown together in a hurry, but that should not deter you from buying the book since its very readable and has a many great information to help you overcome any writers block.

I personally will be referring to this book whenever I need inspiration or a boost of creativity in my writing, and as a new writer I am sure that will be often. I think well seasoned and experienced writers would also benefit from just browsing the questions as you will no doubt get inspired to write a good blog post or a start of a paragraph of a book etc

Caveat: I'm reviewing this book after receiving an advance copy for free.

This would be a fantastic book for an instructor to use with a variety of classes, not just English Comp. I spent 26 years in the field of education, and I wrote instructor materials for book companies for about 10 years. So I feel competent to evaluate Cohen's book from that perspective, as well as from that of a writer.

The prompts in this little book are well written. You might not realize just how important that is, but I can tell you firsthand that it is extremely important to provide your students materials without grammatical or syntax errors! We don't want to give examples of bad behavior, but we sure don't want to give examples of poor writing. There is enough of that "out there" today already, with the freedom we now have to publish anything and everything. I'm not here to debate that issue, but to assert that if you have any concerns about something not put out by a major publishing house, I'm here to allay those fears. This is a GOOD BOOK.

As a writer, I'm always happy to find new books and/or lists of prompts, not so much for writer's block, but more for getting myself to go in new and challenging directions. Writing out of my comfort zone, I call it. I don't see myself referring to Cohen's prompts very often. Too many of them are aimed at students.

Just because I won't be using them doesn't mean they aren't useful. For younger writers, brand new writers trying to gain self-confidence, I think this is a very worthwhile book. If I were an English teacher, I know I would use it regularly. Well done, Mr. Cohen.
