After reading some of Sandford's books, I've come to the following conclusion - his "Prey" books are fantastic but his Kidd and LuEllen books are boring and stupid!
This is similar to "Empress File" - someone hires Kidd and LuEllen to do something to bring someone down - in this case, to destroy the computers of a major defence company and in the process punish the company for stealing the secrets from their rival. But the book is ludicrous! After planting a few computer viruses, the company collapses, army generals are arrested for corruption....is it so easy to destroy a US defence company? I don't think so. Are US systems programmers so stupid that they can't spot a virus and trace it to its source? I don't think so!
Plus it's so blatantly obvious that Kidd and LuEllen are being set up, it's so blatantly obvious who is going to get killed, who the bad guys are, and it's so blatantly obvious that Kidd and LuEllen are being fed a load of bull by their customer. Every reader can see it - why can't the characters? When Sandford finally reveals the shocking truth at the end, he writes it as if no-one has figured it out yet - you'll find yourself sitting there thinking "oh yeah? I figured THAT out on page 10!"
Sandford should stick to writing his "Prey" books. Kidd and LuEllen should be forced into early retirement. By writing the Kidd books, Sandford is obviously writing for the lower end of the market.

While not up to the excellence of his later novels, "Fools Run" is still an great book and entertaining read.
Fast-paced, fun, and full of suspense.
You have to suspend belief somewhat as it is easy for the reader to guess what is going to happen to the characters in the book early on - but in a way this adds to the suspense of the book as you keep wanting the characters to wake up and catch on to what seems obvious to the reader.
This book has a bit of a nostalgic touch to it, as many of the compter terms and equipment talked about in the book are out of date.
If you like this, you should see his book "Empress File"

I like John Sandford's books. In fact, I like them a lot. I guess that is why I found this one disappointing. It's not a bad book. It just isn't up to his usual level. The problem here is one of believability. The two main characters, Kidd and Luellen, are just too bright to find themselves in the mess that they end up in. They should have seen it coming. I certainly did. Then there is the ending when they kill the two "Mob" hitmen. Oh yeah, that was real believable. Anyway, this is better than a lot of books you can read, but it's also at the bottom of Sandford's list.

About two weeks ago I had the pleasure of reading The Fools Run by John Sanford. I had to read this for a book report in English class at school. I usually dread book reports because I am not that much of a reader and most of the books I read for school are very boring. Our English teacher this year lets us pick or own books so we can have more choice.
Well anyway I started reading the book and I actually began to like it. This was a great book to me and the best book I have ever read even though I have not read that much. The Fools Run kept me wanting to find out what was on the next page all the way through the book. The way Sanford wrote this book kept you on the edge of your seat, so if you want to read a book that has action on every page I would suggest The Fools Run.

For computer dweebs and wanna-be-dweebs alike, this thriller involving corporate sabatoge and espionage via computer will keep you processing data at Pentium speed.
A nice meld of military defense development background, big-business economics, underground computer hacking, and of course a little SEX to keep us interested, this
book is a movie waiting to happen, and I can't wait to see it. It's fast paced, intellectually stimulating, and not too smut ridden, as many of the popular press books
are these days. A good read for those of us who want an intelligent thriller that's not too gory, not too steamy, and not too campy for our own style.
