"Fodor's Las Vegas 2014" (376 pages) is divided up into a number of easy to navigate chapters, starting with a 25 page introductory "Experience Las Vegas" (including a handy "Free things to do"), before moving on to "Exploring Las Vegas", with the Strip divided in in South, Central and North. As I am not a gambler, I skipped the 50+ page chapter called "Gamble" altogether. The "Shopping" and "Shows" chapters are informative. But I paid a lot of attention to the last chapter, "Side Trips from Las Vegas", providing 50 pages of very helpful and on point information. There are tons of color pictures and maps throughout this guide.
As it turns out, I took 2 all-day side trips, one was to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon (West Rim), which is 2 1/2 hrs. from Vegas, and well worth the time and money. The other one was an all-day trip to Death Valley National Park, also about 2 1/2 hrs. from Vegas in the opposite direction, and equally well worth it. Incredibly, some travel guides (such as Frommer's Las Vegas) don't even mention either of those in their own chapter on side trips from Vegas! I had the good fortune of also seeing the Cirque du Soleil's Beatles LOVE show, which Fodor had highly recommended, as well as David Copperfield's show at the MGM Grand and also Britney Spear's opening night of her 2 year residency at the Planet Hollywood. And that's not even mentioning just walking around on the Strip, be it during the day or at night time, two completely different experiences. Suffice it to say that I had a fantastic time. And that Fodor's Las Vegas travel guide matched up nicely and had me well prepared for this trip. "Fodor's Las Vegas 2014" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Before the Trip: I used this to plan what we were going to do, and I only found two closed exhibits - the Sirens of TI show outside the hotel, and a mob museum that is closed (not the one downtown). I knew that before we went, so no problems there. The book has a budget section that was helpful as well as sections showing what was close to each hotel, which was helpful
During the Trip: We used this while we were there for closing times, prices, etc. and it was very accurate. We also used it for a side trip to Death Valley, and found the information invaluable. It also has side trips for the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, etc.
In summary, at this point I think this book is not very outdated, and I would recommend purchasing it for use in Las Vegas through at least early 2016. Might as well save a few bucks!
