The information is well organized and easy to sort through. It is worth the money. If purchased well in advance, you can do a lot of your planning with its guidance.
This guide is chocked full of concise info, including the "must do" as well as general explanation of what to expect at each park and nearby. Color pictures give you a flavor of the area and inspire further exploration, while maps are clear and quite comprehensive. Recommendations for food and places to stay are also helpful. Even limited trail information for each area is included and gives difficulty levels as well as brief descriptions. Bonuses include driving routes to visit several parks on a trip, along with a little geology, astronomy, history and science. The book covers 34 parks (including three in Canada) each with its own chapter. Although everything can't be covered, at 920 pages you've got a great review of national parks in the western half of North America.
I checked this book out of the library, but I'm purchasing my own copy to help me plan trips to the few parks we haven't visited and as a reminder of the ones we have. You may want to gather additional information once you focus on a park, but this guide will get you started with enthusiasm and a good understanding of the diversity of western national parks and help you choose which ones to visit--or at least the order to try to visit them all! I highly recommend this book. Happy trails to you!
