Thrown out of her foothills home and chasing after a children's story Alissa has a month to find the Hold, a mythical place of power and learning, before the snow sets in. On her way she meets Strell, a wandering piper from the plains, who has lost his whole family in a tragic flood. Inbred prejudices make for difficult (but amusing) travelling and despite their differences they are drawn to each other. Finally arrived at the Hold, Alissa and Strell find it empty but for Bailic, a dubious Keeper. But who the hec is Useless and why does everyone seem to be obsessed with a mere book?
While FIRST TRUTH it is lovely to read, it's more a prologue to the series than a story in itself. The actual goals of the quest (the claiming of the book and destruction of Bailic) are reserved to HIDDEN TRUTH as is the unveiling of much important ground information (why Alissa craves the book, why her father has left the keep and why there are such strong animosities between coast, plains and foothills folk). I'd definitely recommend to buy both books at once, saving yourself much agonizing.
When her mother realized that Alissa had inherited her father's magical abilities, she sent Alissa away from their farm to search for the Hold and begin her training. Her small bird, Talon, went with her. On the way, they met a wandering musician from the plains named Strell. Even though the farmers and the plainsmen did not get along well, they traveled together hoping to locate the Hold before the snows began.
Bailic was the only Keeper left in the Hold. The power hungry man had sent all the Masters, except one, away on a wild goose chase and then killed the other Keepers. The only Master left was trapped in a hidden dungeon. Bailic searched for a book filled with spells and power called First Truth. When two travelers appeared at the gate, he could sense that one was a latent Keeper, but could not tell which. Regardless, he would use them. Once no longer needed, they would die!
***** Here is an AWESOME new author and I expect her to become very well known fast! Dawn Cook has created a magical world with amazing characters.
I quickly found myself engrossed in the the story line and was irritated every time I had to stop reading. I wanted nothing more than to dive back into this book filled with magic, dragons, and danger. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
But even considering all this i did not like her 'thruth' series much. The author worked out a really good storyline, but i found the bulding up of the characters lacking. Except for her main character 'Alissa' most of the other characters remained quite pale. As the author has less than 10 characters throughout book 1, it is not that big a thing to ask to have them more definded, so the reader feels not indifferent towards them. Summing up all my impressions i felt her 'thruth' series closer to teenage books than a fantasy book for grown ups. My recommendation is, if you liked books in the style of, for example Trudi Canavan you will like the Dawn Cook's 'truth' series.
The story is interesting and and very detailled as well as the charakters who are really fascinating.
A definite must read!
I'm looking forwards to reading the next part!
