Pressestimmen

“Seminal.”
– New York Times

"Gold-standard technical reference book for filmmakers."
-Boston Globe

“The bible – updated.”
- The Independent

"This is an essential book."
-Self-Reliant Filmmaking

"You need this book. Billed as the authoritative guide to filmmaking from fundraising to distribution, the book achieves this in clear, accessible language using current up-to-date information. It's easy to see why this has become a standard text in many film schools. A gilt-edged investment for aspiring and beginning filmmakers and it would not be out of place in the libraries of experienced professionals either."
-James MacGregor, Netribution.co.uk

"This edition of the book is awesome. I don't know how you managed it. Such a mass of information so expertly organized and so clearly presented! Amazing."
-Alfred Guzzetti, Professor, Harvard University

“Anyone who is serious about learning the language and techniques of this art, whether amateur or professional, must have this comprehensive reference.”
- Bookviews

“Speaking as a member of the 'figure it out yourself' camp, I consider most 'technical' reference books to be nothing more than leisure reading. This one is worth its salt. Every page is relevant and fascinating. When I find a chapter that refers to something we've done, I realize that every mistake we made was covered, if only we'd thought to read up beforehand.”
- Genericfilms.com

"I was thrilled to find your book, which is a gem. No matter what corner of the subject I poked into, looking for cogent explanations, the Handbook passed with flying colors. So please accept my admiration, appreciation and thanks."
-Pat Jackson, Associate Professor, San Francisco State University; Emmy-winning Supervising Sound Editor

There are not many books on the market that cover so many different aspects of analogue and digital cinematography. It provides a good overview of relevant topics but does not go too much into the technical details.

It would take a book length to give this book a decent review. So excuse me if I miss the information you are looking for.

This book will really be helpful for anyone interested in all things film; however it is not in a text book form so we do not have to answer questions at the end of each section.

I have not got the time or economics for film making. But I do have the time to read this book and appreciate other's skills. We can rematch those classics or experiments and now see the professionalism that went into their creation.

You will want to keep up with information on technical changes allowing more creativity. There for you will want the latest version but keep this version for the items that did not make it into the newer version. Just because new technology is available we can appreciate the creators that keep to rational methods.

I mostly used this book for technical definitions or to understand the vocabulary used by the film maker so I can better understand what he/she is trying to accomplish. This is why I like to watch the extras o DVD's then watch the film again knowing what to look for.

I am disappointed that the pictures and graphs are in black and white. However I am glad that they do show what the words are trying to portray. You may even see a still from your favorite movie.

While the book talks about such things as lenses and lighting, I now see what was used to create some of my favorite scenes. Then I wonder how they could have been made differently.

You will wonder how you could have missed this book until now.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Bought the newest edition, great technical resource! 23. Januar 2015
Von juliansjunction - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I had originally bought the 3rd edition by mistake, but loved it so much I bought the 4th edition.

The book is broken up into a preface, 17 chapters and four appendices, and a few other smaller sections. Chapter's 1-8 go over pre-production material, chapters 9-12 go over production, and chapters 13-17 goes over post production. I've reprinted the chapter and appendix titles below, they pretty much explain what each chapter details.

Chapter 1. Introduction to Digital and Film Systems
Chapter 2. Before You Begin Production
Chapter 3. The Video Camcorder
Chapter 4. The Lens
Chapter 5. The Video Image
Chapter 6. The Film Camera
Chapter 7. The Film Image
Chapter 8. Color and Filters
Chapter 9. Shooting the Movie
Chapter 10. Sound Recording Systems
Chapter 11. Sound Recording Techniques
Chapter 12. Lighting
Chapter 13. Picture and Dialogue Editing
Chapter 14. Editing Digital Video
Chapter 15. Sound Editing and Mixing
Chapter 16. Working with Film in Postproduction
Chapter 17. Producing and Distributing the Movie

Appendix A. Adjusting a Video Monitor
Appendix B. Data Rates and Storage Needs for Various Digital Formats
Appendix C. Depth of Field Tables
Appendix D. Hyperfocal Distance Table
Appendix E. Angle of View in Different Formats

As others have noted, the information for each section topic can be found through a Google search; however, the book covers what you need to know in a concise, easy to follow format that articles online do not have in one location. The extra technical jargon and details the book does not cover can be found through Google searches - this book is best utilized as a primer and reference to KNOW what to research and learn when you specialize in other filmaking material. No one chapter is covers the entire in-depth scope of that the heading suggests, but essentially details the basics of what you need to know. If you want to learn more about the specifics of cinematography, or how to be a camera operator, you should purchase books or resources dedicated to that specific topic. As a general reference and primer to filmmaking, this is an excellent resource!
5.0 von 5 Sternen The New Testament of Filmmaking 6. Oktober 2014

Techniques in film rarely change but the format on which they are made, and we view them, does. For the past 20 years, film has been making the shift from analogue to digital. This book paves the road to understanding the new age of film and the process of creating a film in the digital format. This handbook covers both the highs and lows of filming in one format versus another. The book takes an in-depth look into every aspect of the film industry, everything from operating cameras, all the way to financing a film. Ascher and Pincus go into specific details about every decision that is made during the filmmaking process. Many readers who also work in the industry have dubbed this book a sort of “bible” for filmmaking in the digital format.
While rich and full of information waiting to be gleaned, “The Filmmakers Handbook” runs a bit on the thick side. It’s a bit daunting for anybody hoping to pick up a few quick pointers on shooting. The Handbook has more than 750 pages, complete with diagrams, dense explanations and in depth details. For someone who wants to be in the thick of it, and study film for an indefinite period, this book is a bible. Without a doubt, this is no full write-up, but just a cursory glance by a prospective filmmaker would tell them that a lot of love on the part of Ascher and Pincus went into getting this book on the shelves.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome for missing knowledge 25. Juli 2016
Von Aurélie - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I love this book. I was always thinking that I was missing just the core knowledge of filmaking, rudimentary stuff that you don't know that you don't know. This book, that is pretty much a textbook, is perfect to tell you from the very beginning, what you need to know. It's also very well chaptered, so you can go directly to what you need very quickly, and they make connections between different pages of the book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The bedtime story I read myself to sleep. 10. Februar 2015
Von Communicator K - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This book is SUPER detailed. I have the kindle version, and use it as reading material while the sleeping pills kick in. Yes, it's dry and technical... but what do you expect of such an exhaustive tome on filmmaking. I feel like film school won't be worth the money by the time I'm done reading this cover to cover. Looking forward to finishing it (in the next month... melatonin works!)
5.0 von 5 Sternen Essential Reading for the Video Filmmaker 11. Juli 2016
Von Christopher A. Earle - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I'm actually reading this book from cover to cover. Every now and then, I do skip a section- say, like when they talk about film equipment, as opposed to video (which I shoot.) It's very technical, but I believe that knowing the technical issues and technology is essential. Despite the technical bent, the book also has plenty of information on other aspects of film making, such as continuity, mise en scene, etc. I suppose that if you want to get more granular vis a vis the more artistic aspects of film making, you might want to add other books to your library as well. I am very glad I purchased this book.
