12 year old Harry Winslow learns a lesson in responsiblity!
"Fighter Escort" is the second book in the series 'Tales of the RAF'. In this installment, the brave pilots of the RAF 14th Squadron fly fighter escort for a formation of American B-24 bombers. Meanwhile, twelve year old Harry Winslow "falls" into some trouble of his own. Thanks to the RAF fighter support, the bomber formation returns, but only after receiving more than their share of punishment. But, some of the "war-weary" planes can only make it as far as the airfield next to young Harry's house. While the "Yanks" are guests at Hampton Airfield, Harry learns about bravery and responsiblity from a crusty American pilot.
As I mentioned in the author review of "Scramble!" (the first book in the 'Tales of the RAF' series), my nine year old son hates to read. In part, because it was hard to find books that interested him. I decided to create some stories he would find interesting, so I used the excitement of World War II pilots and airplanes. To make the stories worthwile, I blended the action and adventure with lessons in responsiblity, leadership, friendship and compassion.
In addition to the story, the illustrations by Sonny Schug make it hard to put the book down. An aviation artist, Sonny has used his passion for painting airplanes to illuminate each book. Within the 90 pages of this book are over 40 illustrations to provide interest and rest breaks for young eyes.
Thumb through the pages and it will bring out the "twelve year old boy" inside you. And have some faith in me, I'm writing for 8-12 year olds, my own son included. The pilots always return safely, one way or another. There's no "blood in the canopy" either in text or illustration. And, when a plane gets shot down, parachutes pop open. These books are not about war. They are about the noble aspects of human nature that arise during life threatening situations. I like to tell the stories in the same way granparents generally do.
I have found that girls have a much greater selection for reading available to them than boys. As a parent, I am proud to provide my son, and others like him, a collection of books that allow an interesting, worthwhile, and successful reading experience.
