Since it's breast cancer awareness time, I thought I would read this, although it's been on my Kindle for a while. I am very impressed with what Dr. Tabor has to say, and the fact that he graduated from JHH medical school helps, too. His references include NIH and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)and also the New England Journal of Medicine.
The book is divided up into chapters on different foods and other sources that may help prevent breast cancer and other cancers and also improve health and help individuals lose weight. At the end of each chapter, when giving the amounts of whatever it is, Dr. Tabor tells what he himself takes or eats each day, so he is practicing what he preaches.
In Chapter 1, he says that if you aren't proactively fighting breast cancer, then chances of getting it are higher. This book was published in 2010 and estimates were that 207,090 new cases would develop that year and that 39,840 deaths would occur. It adds up to 500 new cases every day. Astounding statistics. Food and lifestyle changes are the best things we can do for ourselves to lower the risk of contracting breast cancer, the risk of recurrence and the risk of death from it.
In coming years, 1 out of 8 women will get breast cancer and millions will be diagnosed in the next decade. Women are getting it at younger and younger ages, too. The book lists the many things that predispose us to breast cancer, including obesity, family history, age when first child was born, age when menstruation started, use of HRT, breast density, parity, and among others, your level of Vitamin D3 and that biggie, lack of exercise.
This book, just like my own doctor, stresses the daily intake of Vitamin D3. Everyone should be tested for it by a simple blood test and if deficient, then prescription strength Vitamin D3 given by the doctor until the level is normal, then a daily dose that is recommended by the doctor. This might mean a 70% reduction in risk.
Next he lists the top ten foods to fight breast cancer. They are: carrots, green tea, apples, fiber, Omega-3 oils, flaxseed, walnuts, pomegranates, broccoli, low-glycemic foods which are low in sugar or starch. For most of these foods, supplements that have the extracts from the foods in them are available.
The last part is losing weight, and Dr. Tabor has his own plan for losing weight. It adds up to 1200 calories a day and seems to be a sensible eating plan that is easy to follow. It is outlined in the book in detail. He recommends a protein shake for breakfast with fruit, and says that he has been drinking a protein shake every morning for breakfast for 10 years. He sells none of this himself in the book, and as far as I know doesn't promote a line of his own products, although I haven't been to his website.
I think this is an excellent source for information on breast cancer and how to be proactive in trying to prevent it. Trying never hurts. For general health and weight loss, it's also a good source of information. Dr. Tabor is very supportive and gives an e-mail address where he can be contacted with questions.
I highly recommend this book and I've started already with modifying my diet. 5 stars!
