How could such bad writing be published in the first place? And why are so many people buying it? The characters are flat and lifeless and I think there is no way in hell they could be more stereotypical. The world itself is geographically completely inaccurate and the characters seem like Brits that have accidentally been placed in the US. And then the sex – dear lord, if you are to chicken to write accurate sex scenes, then don’t do it! And last but not least – the most terrible thing about this book and the reason why I feel really bad about buying it and thus contributing to its success, the weird abusive relationship between the main characters! I have no problem with consensual BDSM (hey, whatever floats your boat), but a man that has been tormented and sexually abused as a child/teenager and is therefore now a sexual sadist that feels bad about being a sexual sadist… in a dom/sub relationship with a young woman with virtually no self-esteem, who has never had an orgasm in her life… well that is bad. I wonder how people can actually think this is okay – yes, he makes her sign a weird contract… but you can only give consent to something if you really understand what your signing up for. And I would posit that a young sexually absolutely (unrealistically) inexperienced woman is not at all able to give informed consent to the sort of “relationship” depicted in this book. What is described in this book is not safe, consensual BDSM play between two adults but an abusive relationship. And btw angry sex with a woman who left you and hid from you because she was so afraid of you, with a woman who told you she did not want to be with you anymore – sorry, but that is rape.
And this is a book that is a huge international success and I really, really, really wonder why…
… is it because of the porn? The sex scenes in this book are terribly written and even though there is some BDSMish play involved, the sex is not even very imaginative – I would advise anyone to read a good erotic novel instead, there are many out there and I would imagine all of them are better than 50 Shades of Grey. You can buy books that are plain porn (if it is supposed to be stereotypical mommy porn I assume all Silhouette Desire books would be a good choice, or if you want paranormal mommy porn try Alyssa Day’s “Warriors of Poseidon” series) and books that have sex scenes and lots of eroticism and a good plot (I’m just throwing a few names out there: Jessica Bird, Lara Adrian, JR Ward, Nalini Singh, Adrian Phoenix).
… is it the BDSM? Again, I advise reading good BDSM erotica, really, just buy any book on the subject, it is bound to be better than this one (i.ex. try the “Sleeping Beauty” trilogy by Anne Rice aka Anne Roquelaure or, if you want the fluffy not all too scary version try JR Ward’s “Lover Unbound”).
… is it the “Alpha Male” thing? Well, seriously, Nalini Singh’s “Kiss of Snow”. S’all I’m saying.
… is it the troubled “hero” with a horrible childhood? There are tons of good books with this particular kind of character – Nalini Singh’s “Caressed by Ice” or “Archangel’s Storm” and JR Wards “Lover Awakened” come to mind (though I am not a huge fan of JR Ward, cause her world is quite sexist, everything she has ever written is a million times better than 50 Shades of Grey).
… is it the fact that some women still think they are not supposed to enjoy sex? This is an idea I picked up in some really good discussions of 50 Shades. If you were under the impression that it makes you a slut/an unworthy woman to want and enjoy sex, then I guess the only way to really enjoy it would be if you were kinda forced to have sex and liked it? Well I guess if this is why this book has sold horrendously event though the writing is so flawed, I would hope that every single man and woman in the world starts wondering if it is okay that a woman that enjoys sex is deemed a slut. And I guess it is safe to say that the fact that so many women are buying erotic novels is a good indicator for assuming that sex is not all that repulsive to women, eh?
… is it because it is a disguised Twilight fan fiction? Well… there is definitely way better fan fiction out there and I would assume there is also better Twilight fan fiction out there ([...]or simply any search engine would be a good start I guess).
In conclusion – DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! You have missed nothing at all if you haven’t read it. Go buy some of the way better alternatives.
If I hear "Jeez" and "Holy Shit" once again, I'll hit the roof!!!
The spanking on the butt is okay - I could like it ;) Christian's spending loads on Ana - and I like that too!!! He spoils her - Hmm... fabulous! She's terribly innocent for a 22 year old -
now THAT is the fairytale part, because not even an American girl can be THAT innocent.
Oh yes - she loves the way his trousers hand on his hips - about a million times!!!
And she loves the way he keeps running his fingers through his hair - about a trillion times!!!
Oh! And did I mention that Ana bites her underlip pretty often? - about a zillion times!!!Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One of the Fifty Shades Trilogy (50 Shades Trilogy)
02.08.2012 Finished reading all three volumes of "50 Shades of Grey/50 Shades darker/50 Shades freed " In my opinion the books are the worst books paper and ink have been wasted on -or as in my case memory bits and bytes have been wasted on. Alternative names for this catastrophe? "Fiftyy Shades of Gross" - "Fifty Shades of Puke" - "Fifty Shades of absolute stupidity"
Can I recommend these books? No way!!!
If you are on the look out for kinky-sex (to read ofcourse #wink) these books aren't your reply.
These books deserve a 6- and some wanna-be-authors are and remain just THAT... Wanne-be-s. I hope this woman, E.L. James, is a better housewife and mother than "jeez" author...
Don't waste your money on this trash.
