First published in 1983, Fateful Triangle is a comprehensive indictment of what Noam Chomsky calls the "disgraceful and extremely dangerous" policy the United States has enacted towards Israel, particularly with regard to Israel's actions concerning the Palestinians. Supporters of Israel must willfully overlook or deny that nation's long history of human rights violations and military aggression, Chomsky writes, and they will continue to do so as long as Israel is strategically useful towards "the U.S. aim of eliminating possible threats, largely indigenous, to American domination of the Middle East region." In the course of elaborating his argument, Chomsky cuts through the myths and distortions that appear in mainstream media accounts; the damning facts that he so systematically assembles portray a government more brutally and overtly racist, perhaps, than even apartheid-era South Africa. Three new chapters, drawing upon material from Z magazine and other publications, incorporate such developments as the Palestinian uprising, Israel's war on Lebanon, and the ongoing "peace process."

Pressestimmen

“Fateful Triangle may be the most ambitious book ever attempted on the conflict between Zionism and the Palestinians viewed as centrally involving the United States. It is a dogged expose of human corruption, greed, and intellectual dishonesty. It is also a great and important book, which must be read by anyone concerned with public affairs.”
—Edward Said, from the foreword

"A devastating collection of charges aimed at Israeli and American policies that affect the Palestinian Arabs negatively."
—Library Journal

"Brilliant and Unscrupulous."
—Observer

"A major, timely and devastating analysis of one of the great tragedies.”
—Fred Halliday, Tribune

"Formidable."
—The Jewish Quarterly

“One of the definitive works on the Israeli Palestinian conflict.”
—Amy Goodman

While Chomsky is repeatedly criticised for his stances on American foreign policy, the book does not warrant the usual accusations of bias. Chomsky's study is exhaustively documented, including a vast array of Israeli journalistic sources, and presents an argument that the reader cannot help but consider. He makes clear that the Middle East is much more complext than we are led to believe; that numerous agendas compete for power within both Israeli and Palestinian circles. He helps us understand the motivations for actions ranging from the invasion of Lebanon (and its place in the Israeli political culture), the beginnings of the Zionist state (including terrorist methods later adopted by the PLO), and Palestinian reasonings for their retaliations. Particularly excellent, at least in the later editions, is the chapter on the Palestinian uprising. Never before, as far as I am aware, has a scholar analysed this turbulent period, and in doing so considered both sides of the issue even-handedly.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of the modern Middle East.

I've read many books by many authors on the subject of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and I would have to say that this book is the best of the bunch. It is a classic. He backs up every single statement he makes with facts, often quoting Israeli sources. He is so thorough in his arguments that it is practically impossible to argue against him.
One of the reviews below dismissed this work as being biased and anti-Semetic. This is a ridiculous claim considering the fact that Chomsky is Jewish and used to teach Hebrew when he was younger. This individual also stated that the Arab states created the problem of the Palestinian refugees. This is simply not true and even Israeli historians dismiss such claims as lies and propoganda (eg. Morris, Segev, Flapan, etc.).
Buy it, read it, study it... it is an impressive work.

The reader from Jupiter Florida disagrees with Chomsky, because the latter exposes israel's terrorism and the American unconditional support for that terrorism.

Chomsky ranks with the the worlds best political analysts such as Edward Said and this book is a shining example. Most Americans do not know that U.S. aid to Israel is supplying a non-democratic/oppressive/racist nation in not just its campaign against the Palastinians and their land but through military transfers that have caused the lives of thousands in Latin America. A must read for anyone who cares for the truth!

Dr. Chomsky is at his usual unstoppable best in this seminal tome, effectively demolishing mainstream, accepted ideas about Israel and the Middle East by quoting exhaustively from myriad sources.
Read this book if you are interested in an honest, no-holds-barred picture of the modern Middle East. This book cuts so hard against the grain of American media coverage that it my fingers bleed just to hold it.
