While the card stock is not up to par with other notable CCGs, the easy to grasp concepts and complexities of strategy easily make this a top notch game.
Quality Control on the cards could be a little tighter as there is some evidence of edge roughness on the die cut cards, but the color saturation and positioning of the images are spot on time and time again. The artwork runs the gamut of excellent to OK, rather like early MTG core and expansion sets. I wish the card artwork and card stock was given as much attention as the outstanding box cover & art!
The LCG format where every Chapter Pack has the same set of cards is refreshing, making it much easier for someone of casual interest to get involved in the game without worrying about spending tons of cash to get the ultra-super-duper-only three exist in the known universe-chase-rare-chase-cards. everyone can easily get the same cards and then it comes down to deck construction, strategy, and luck.
The tie in to the books is obvious from the art, the card names & effects, and the flavor txt. This is timely as the TV series is gaining steam and proves to be quite popular. This LCG should prove a valuable vehicle to introduce more fans to George R.R. Martin's franchise. For those already familiar with the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, this game becomes an avenue to become part of the House they prefer, or explore the advantages of rival Houses in a new light [or come to despise hated Houses all the more; having suffered personal defeats at their hand, not just those read in the books]. The game is deeply woven into Martin's rich world of Westeros.
The game can be enjoyed by 2 or more. There are established variations of game play such as Civil War, Kingsmoot, and Joust. I can easily see customizing these with traditional variations created for other CCGs such as Two Headed Giant.
Some expansions introduce new game play mechanics and come with comprehensive rule explanations, but further clarification can be found on Fantasy Flight's website. There seems to be a growing online community offering FAQ support, strategy, and tournaments.
I expect to get a lot of enjoyment from this game with only a small outlay of cash!
Second; on the Lions of the Rock expansion specifically:
As an expansion themed for House Lannister, there are several obligatory options to increase gold.
Clansmen and cards with effects beneficial for Clansmen are prominent.
There are several useful variations of Lannister Characters found in the core set [Cersei, Tyrion, Tywin, and Ser Jamie].
To a lesser extent, there are a smattering of cards allowing characters to attack without kneeling, and a few more controlling cards that prevent standing to varying degrees.
There are 4 cards that can kill characters through various effects.
4 neutral Plot cards are included with great effects.
2 important cards allow additional Intrigue challenges.
2 cards allow claim of extra Power.
This is not a comprehensive list, but just an idea of what this expansion may be useful for. I would highly recommend this set for those wishing to play House Lannister and those looking to expand their available Plot
This expansion contain more essential Lannister cards and one of the best Cersei Lannisters (does not kneel to Intrigue, gains power for successful Intrigues), as well as suggested deck lists you can build with the Core and House expansion together.
Overall, you will need a House expansion to develop your deck further and this is the way to go!
