3.0 von 5 Sternen Not really about SPN or even fandoms in general, but a good bluff to get face time with TV stars 12. Dezember 2013

This book doesn’t cover fandom or any theories about it that would satisfy general or academic readers. In fact, the whole book seems to be a pretext for the authors to meet Jensen Ackles and get his blessing for slash fiction. The best they get, in an interview late in the book, is his awareness that slash exists and his bemusement that anyone would want to read his off-set friendship with Jared Padalecki as gay, but that doesn’t stop the authors from spinning his comment into off-base academese about “male intimacy” because their stated goal is to “de-shame” the practice of slash fiction. Throughout the whole book, they skimp on explanations of slash fiction in favor of insisting that it’s “empowering” and reading explicit approval in to the actors’ good-natured resignation to its existence.

After a superficial theory piece, most of the book narrates a series of conventions attended and road trips undertaken in pursuit of interviews with people involved in the making of Supernatural. Very few fans are interviewed about their participation in the fandom, though you’d think that would be key to understanding the phenomenon. It’s thus not surprising when regular convention-going fans come to resent the authors for having green-room access to conduct interviews just on the strength of their PhDs and the claim that they’re writing a book. The authors could have taken that as a springboard for musings on fandom, but it’s one of several missed opportunities and blind spots that plague their process. After their crowning glory as interviewers -- a set visit and interviews with the stars in Vancouver -- they are shocked to find a potential book deal with Warner Brothers yanked out from under them, to be replaced with a cease and desist letter. They see it as bean-counting meanies shaming the passionate fans, but the suits who facilitated their visit wanted a marketable paean to the fans and one that wouldn’t make their property look like freak fodder. When the authors wouldn’t budge on delivering an idiosyncratic account of slightly unhealthy fannish obsession, peppered with interviews in which slash fiction is inevitably brought up, the suits pulled the plug. It may have been abrupt and confusing to the authors, but it’s pretty standard in the entertainment industry, and I daresay they should have known better if they wanted to delve into the workings of a TV show. All shows are answerable to these commercial forces.

A bigger problem with the book is the authors’ lack of a critical stance, especially towards their own motivations. Some of their behavior as fans is, in fact, textbook addict behavior: rationalizing (in this case by feigning a scholarly approach), neglecting family, excessive spending, and even terminating a relationship rather than scaling back. To wave away legitimate criticisms with academic buzzwords about female desire, subversiveness, and a refusal to be “shamed” is intellectually lazy. The interviews they managed to collect before the C&D are interesting, though the authors are too willing to take statements at face value. Their subjects are actors and allied professionals. They know better than to disparage extreme fans to their faces, whether out of kindness or just PR savvy. If the authors suspect that their interviews may be capturing answers that are diplomatic by design, they don’t say so. Most disappointing of all, when Misha Collins cleverly turns the tables on the interviewers and asks what they think slash writers get from their hobby, they have no substantial answer, or at least none that they share with readers.

Despite the bizarre methodology and lack of real introspection, this book is worth picking up, if only for the interviews. They seem to have stopped interviewing at some point in the fourth season (2008 or 2009), but I would have liked an epilogue about the introduction of the slightly unhinged, if well-intentioned, slash fangirl Becky Rosen as a minor recurring character.

Having been a fan of something or other for most of my life, I read this book because I wanted to know why "fandom" is so attractive to certain people. Not only am I a Supernatural fan, but I wanted to know why I liked it. And, I wanted an explanation for why I liked genre in particular. The writers of this book do refer to other genre tv shows and movies and provide enlightening discussion on them. While reading this book, I found myself relating to writer Kathy and was relieved to know that there was someone else like me out there. Like Kathy, I've always been too embarrassed at conventions, even apologetic at times. This book is well-written mixing academic insights with fangirl appreciation. I especially enjoyed the interviews and recounting of humorous events which took place during the writers' journey into Supernatural fandom I recommend this book to anyone who is a Supernatural fan and to others interested in fandom and/or why people become fans.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A gotta have for fans.... 22. Januar 2014

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I bought this book (I didn’t read reviews until after I finished the book). Two professors writing a book on fandom…Supernatural fandom at that. What could I lose?
Well, I’m very glad I bought this book. Lynn & Kathy did a great job conveying what every true fan has felt at least once in their lives. The looks from those who don’t understand, the shame brought on by those people, and the difficulties the love of our fandom can bring in “real life”. It’s a perfect mix of their professional research & the view of their own experiences. This book hit home and explained things I’ve been trying to figure out about myself since I got hooked into another fandom years ago and started writing fan fiction as an outlet, especially after it was cancelled.
Personally, I’ve not been able to attend a convention, and don’t know if I ever will, but through Lynn & Kathy’s eyes, I received a bird’s eye view of what to expect from one. Fellowship, fun, fangirl moments, & of course lack of sleep. Thank you for providing me with such personal insight. Despite technical difficulties, emotional vulnerabilities that you allowed us in on, and other obstacles put up by TPTB & just simply life, it’s inspiring that you both trudged your way through it all and came out on the brighter side of it.
I enjoyed all the different interviews, the insights on what they think about us fans (and yes, definitely the fanfics out there) and the appreciation everyone, including those behind the scenes, have for the show and those who love the show.
Some said (in lower rated reviews) that it was a way for you to convince everyone that slash fan fiction is the best way to go or that it’s very Jensen biased. Uh, hello…Lynn & Kathy are both huge Jensen fans and they both write slash. If I’d have been part of writing this book, it would have more Jared squealing…and even more slash talk. 
This is a MUST HAVE for your bookshelf if you are a Supernatural fan, or even if you are into fandom, period. Thank you, ladies for the wonderful, astute book.

I absolutely love this book. I have read it cover to cover twice, underlining, taking notes and pondering its contents. It helped me understand why people are fans of everything from sports to bands to TV shows. I helped me understand the inner workings of the entertainment industry. It helped me understand actors, and what they think about the shows they’re on and the fans who follow them. It helped me understand, accept and celebrate… myself. It is a wonderful mix of legitimate psychological analysis being applied to honest and raw human experiences. The authors bare their souls, letting the readers share their triumphs, thrills, embarrassments and failures. The book is well-written, full of laugh-out-loud moments and what-happens-next suspense. You can’t put it down.
I think everyone who has ever been a fan should read this book to learn a little more about themselves. I also highly recommend it to anyone who is or might ever be an object of fandom (sports figures, musicians, actors, etc.) or who wish to work in those industries. Supernatural fans will revel in its unparalleled interviews with the actors and crew of the show, plus insider information about the show’s creation. If you don’t fit into any of those categories, you may wish to read it simply because it is a wonderful story that will warm your heart.

5.0 von 5 Sternen They nailed it 30. Dezember 2013

In reading this book, I found out that my experience with Supernatural is anything but unique. These women did what we diehard fans WANT to do (but are held back by finances or life or practicality) and I couldn't stop reading until the book was done. This book reads like a labor of love and I'm so glad they loved this show and this fandom enough to put this much work into a book that's for fans, by fans, and about fans. People fall hard for different shows and actors all the time...but there is something different about Supernatural and this book gets that across. I understand why other reviewers thought the authors pushed the slash fiction aspect of fandom too much; but that is their interest and they are free to write about it. The only criticism I have is that I found the most engaging parts of the book to be those that dealt with the authors' personal experiences (how THEY experienced being fans of the show in increasingly intense ways)...those were more engaging than the interviews with the actors and I wish they had done more interviews with other fans to get THEIR experiences on their road to being extremely involved fans of the show. But it was fascinating to read about how the two authors pursued their obsession and what the rewards of that pursuit were (as well as the price they paid for it). I wanted both; the interviews with the actors AND I wanted to hear more about the experiences of other fans. Thank you.
