Nothing about this book is practical: no how-to to be found. How does one move toward or into the second half of life? One might think the answer has something to do with "falling upward", but this is not the subject until the very last chapter, which provides no real help. I am also not impressed with Rohr's digressions, bold (but unsubstantiated) claims, and mixing of widely different religious traditions as if they are all basically the same. I would have overlooked this latter point (I don't only read confirmations of my own views) if he would at least have provided something a bit more concrete and practical. Count me not a fan.

Diese Buch ist eine tiefe Ermutigung für mich. Viele was mich in meinem Leben bewegt, über den Sinn des Altern wird hier angesprochen.
Es wäre toll, wenn man auch so innerlich diesen Weg der Reife gehen könnte. Das Buch ist auf jedenfalls ein große Hilfe dabei, es zu versuchen.

Richard Rohr is acknowledged as being one of the wisest contemporary spiritual guides. As the author or more than 20 books, he continually refines his skilful use of language to both simplify and make accessible the most profound of life’s truths. In tackling the issue of this book i.e. the necessary wisdom of the second half of life, he has drawn on his extensive personal experience, his wide scholarship and insight into the traditions of the world religions (especially those of the Buddhist way of life) and ancient and modern philosophy. I liked in particular his retelling of the story of Homer’s Odyssey and how its wisdom can be related to our world vision. In addition, his metaphor of building one’s life “container” and then filling it as we go along is both helpful and innovative. I believe that this book will be more suitable for readers in the second half of life’s journey but first halfers too might find it challenging and insightful. He notes that “truth is about reconciling contradictions” (p54) and that “myths hold together the paradoxes that the rational mind cannot cope with”. In this wonderful book he has accomplished this reconciliation and held together many of the paradoxes of life.

It's rare that a book moves me so deeply that I review it. Well, 'Falling Upward' is one such rarity.

It's unlikely you'll understand it if you're under 40, not being age-elitist at all but simply that most people haven't failed enough by that age. Coming to that realisation that we are not defined by what we do, have or achieve is a painful but necessary part of our spiritual journey.
Richard Rohr explains this so beautifully, and really pinpoints how failure becomes inspiration not something to avoid.

My only possible criticism could be that the process is described as such a beautiful, moving and necessary part of the spiritual journey, and one that not that many people truly embrace ... for me it leads to feelings of being special, superior and it being praise when I recognize the steps I have already walked. Ha! Which shows me once again MY continued failure of arrogance and how very far I have yet to go. Yes and I'm grateful for that gift too :)

I'm well into the second half of my life and have recently developed a healthy interest in religion. A good friend recommended this book and I in turn, commend it to you. Richard Rohr has a very neat way of making complex theology very simple.

Reading this book I fund myself startlingly true to type and hugely reassured by this book. Yes I spent decades chasing money and now my focus is on social impact. This I reassuringly find is a positive sign. Whatever you do and however young you are, this book is worth a read.

This book treats Jesus Christ as just one example of a generic spirituality, rather than the Image of the invisible God Who alone enables us to know God as Father. The approach resembles that of a blindfolded man who stumbles in broad daylight across a broad terrain, grabbing desperately at things as he passes, and totally failing to perceive the shape and beauty of the landscape. I became increasingly troubled as I read this book and, looking online, was relieved to find that my instincts are shared by Anglican Mainstream, among others.
