HASH(0x939f78a0) von 5 Sternen Excellent book with some caveats 24. Juli 2012

This is probably the sensible place to start for any newcomer to the import-export business. "For Dummies" books might well lead to a good number of jokes, and there is a certain dilution of the brand through SO many titles, but the books from the publisher that I've used have been uniformly excellent (for example, Charlie Trotter's Gourmet Cooking for Dummies). What was in this book was also of excellent quality, as many reviews have pointed out, but let me note a few omissions:

- Nothing about ITAR! This is a big deal for high tech import-export, and is a super-tricky business with "deemed" exports of controlled technology. Don't do anything with borders and technology until you have a decent understanding of ITAR.
- As someone else noted, Foreign Corrupt Practices is a big deal! Who hasn't paid a bribe in Mexico or Egypt? Barely mentioned.
- alibaba.com is mentioned in passing (though noting that the author hears about it more and more), but is now a major force in the "cheap Chinese imports" side of the business. Some other web references also feel a year or two out of date.

The CD is an excellent collection of items, including many forms that are locatable online, but nice to have collected in one place.

HASH(0x93a022f4) von 5 Sternen Not very current, but an easy to understand overview 3. Januar 2013

This is the newer, more expensive version of the 2009 import/export for dummies, yet much of the information is old! There is no mention of the US/S.Korea FTA... which is unfortunate since our business exports from S.Korea to the US.

However, it was an easy read and has all the basic information you'd need in one place, but unfortunately nothing more than what I'd learned from the internet during my own searches.
I did find the information on different cultures to be accurate without being over generalistic or out-dated. Points for that.

I'd recommend it if u have dont have the time to find all the basic information u need on sites like customs and border protection, but beware, laws change all the time and you'll have to double check before deciding what forms you need to fill out.

HASH(0x93a02234) von 5 Sternen Excellent resources to understand import/expert business 14. September 2012

This book is written for DIY folks who know something about some product or market and wants to understand the entire Import/Export process. For begninners, this is a rich treasure trove of good information covering huge pertinent topics. The contents are segmented into five parts (1) setting up the business, (2) learning how to identify applicable rules and regulations, (3) identifying suppliers, (4) find customers and, (5) develop an understanding about certain procedures that are unique in importing and exporting. The book also provides tips on how to import and export successfully.

After reading the book I learned more than I anticipated, and my mind is enlightened by many details that I was not aware of prior to reading it.

The included CD is an excellent collection of items. It includes many forms that can be found online, but it's nice to have collected in one place.

I am sure there may be other books out there that are better, but for just $13.59, this is a great first read. This is a great starter book for anybody who would like to get interested. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who would be interested in the idea of starting an import/export business.

I'm generally not a big fan of "For Dummies" books - I often find them too superficial and often bloated with repetition and filler, but in this case I think they've done a pretty good job of providing a solid overview of what one needs to know to start an import or export business. I've been kicking around the idea of having some products manufactured in Asia, and though it seems like everyone is doing it, it's not that easy to find legitimate information about it to build a business plan. There are plenty of companies that will take a lot of money to "consult" with you, but I always prefer to build a solid understanding of a process before I start spending money to have conversations about it. This book has given me a good basic understanding of the ins and outs, and a lot of direction in terms of finding out more information specific to my area of interest. A consultant would have charged me 5 figures for the same body of knowledge. I'm also certain that I could have found a lot of this information on the Internet, but how much junk would I have had to filter through to get to the essential info? I found this book very direct and to the point without a lot of extra nonsense.

I still don't know if I'm going to go into importing, but at least I feel well informed enough to take the next steps if I'm so inclined.

HASH(0x93a011c8) von 5 Sternen Not Sure Who This Book Is For 14. April 2012

What is an importer/exporter? If you grew-up watching Seinfeld in the '90s, they tossed around this job title a few times, making jokes that played on the fact that few people know what it's all about, but it sure sounds good.

One doesn't just become an importer or an exporter out of the blue. They might become a freight forwarder. One becomes an exporter because one has something to sell internationally, and one becomes an importer because they need to import something to sell it. Importing and exporting go hand and hand in the process, but seldom are they part of the same job description. A freight forwarder is far more likely to deal in both aspects than any other small business would.

I'm not really sure who this book is for. If you're already importing or exporting, you're beyond the depth of the book, and if you've haven't done any importing or exporting, it (rightly so) often advises that you seek the assistance of trustworthy, experienced professionals, especially a freight forwarder.

This is one of those subjects which does not lend itself to DIY. Actually, it's two subjects, as importing and exporting are very different things. And I'm just having a hard time figuring out who really is going to benefit from this book on a practical level.
