3.0 von 5 Sternen Decent for the bare essentials, but lacking for the Essential Speak with Confidence Series. 4. Oktober 2014
Von Phil B - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I've bought several of the phrasebooks from Tuttle such as Essential Arabic, Essential Chinese, and the Making Out series books. In comparison to the other Essential series, this feels very formal and straightforward and not as "friendly."

In the other Essential Speak with Confidence Phrasebooks such as Arabic and Korean, you have a wider range of expressions in replying and asking for opinions. The Hindi phrasebook gives a few very formal replies and uses the rest for the questions about children, and family which is the big subject in small talk.

The invitation section in Hindi also feels less sociable. The other phrasebooks in the Essential series tell you how to invite people to the movies, dancing and colloquial ways to accept or refuse an invitation. The Hindi version doesn't give too much of a way to reply to invitations in the way the other phrasebooks do and where it does, it's not as natural as the other books in the series.

You even have a more detailed Romance/Intimate conversation section if you needed it. One may think that this may be a cultural difference, but if the Arabic phrasebook can give these expressions despite the cultural background, it isn't exactly out of the question to expect the same or something close from the Hindi phrasebook.

When the phrasebook comes to survival, it is just as adequate as the others; however, I think this phrasebook is too preoccupied with the formal and informal ways of saying things. There is a way to balance this as the Lonely Planet phrasebooks do well. I didn't expect this to be as "hip" as the Making Out in Hindi phrasebook, which is very excellent in offering a wide range of expressions and ways to communicate with Hindi speakers. Overall, this Essential Hindi phrasebook feels like it is targeting the older traveler who mainly wants to get through his trip in India where as the small talk sections in the other Essential series made you feel more open to practice and speak the language.
4.0 von 5 Sternen A good starting point 2. November 2014

Format: Taschenbuch
The short introduction tells us that the book is aimed as a basic guide for getting you started in communicating in Hindi. As such, I think it would be particularly useful for anyone who has connections to SE India (whether business, private or as a tourist) and would like to take their knowledge of the language further than just 'hello' and 'my name is'.

The book starts with a pronunciation guide and basic grammar. These are not too complex and even for a complete beginner easy to understand. In my opinion, you have to work through those in order to go on to the first lesson and actually learning words. But fear not, there are only 5 pages of pronunciation and 13 pages of grammar.

As with most language learning books, the chapter start with simple and basic information (Personal Details, time, numbers) etc and coach you on to more complex sentences. The chapters have example sentences and a list of words as well as useful information (i.e. holidays, info on religion ) The chapters do not cover exercises - I think that would require a much more extensive book and this one here is only intended to get you started.

I think this can not only an excellent starting point, but it may also help you decide whether this is the language for you.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Many times grammar books give good explanations and a few examples 21. August 2015

There is some grammar explanation in the beginning of the book, but it is not a grammar book. I was looking for some text that would simply give me more practice in day to day speech. Many times grammar books give good explanations and a few examples, but since I am learning on my own, I needed to "hear" the language more--through simple conversations on the printed page. This is a help. I am glad I bought it.
