Epic Role Playing is a next generation RPG that contains intense, choice-filled combat, six innovative branches of magic, and culture-based character development. After an introductory chapter, the Epic Role Playing Rules Manual guides players through a wide-ranging and unique character creation process, which births culturally driven, diverse heroes unconstrained by classes or inflexible tracks of progress. Character professions (detailed in the Atlas of Eslin, Volume I) are culturally defined and growth within them is guided by role playing not a rigid set of rules. Following chapters include the faculty system, which offers opportunities to explore an inexhaustible array of skill options, specialties, masteries and grandmasteries. Instead of characters defined by an overall skill level, each skill level is independent and improves according to the character's talent for that skill. This is followed by a detailed catalogue of equipment. In its chapters for the gamemaster, or "Guide", practical tools and storytelling advice are discussed for creating heroic adventures that will have players swooning with terror and scrambling for glory. The final chapters are a treasury chock-full of high-quality and imbued items and rules for large-scale battle and warfare. The Epic Rules Manual makes gaming easier with numerous quick reference boxes, a glossary, ready-to-use forms, and integration with www.epicrpg.com. This book is one of four core rulebooks for use with the Epic Role Playing game system.

I was not disappointed!
The EPIC RPG Rules Manual is a functional, easy to read and enjoyable gamebook.
The 2d10 mechanics, use of only d10's, skill based characters (with approriate profession based meta-talents called "Masteries") and lifepath driven pc creation, with an eye towards 'role-playable' characters over 'roll-playable' ones, makes for an overall great game!
I would give it four stars, but the lack of any examples of variants(spells) and the lack of the same for beasts/adversaries, of any kind, reduces the book's usefulness just a wee bit...although a good GM with a reasonable understanding of the system could extrapolate such info if needed.
Also, the forums at the game's website are fast becoming an amiable and interesting place to discuss this game.
If you buy this game, and I hope you do, the forums are a great place to learn more and become involved.
The authors and owners are friendly and responsive to their customers and fellow EPIC players!
The revamped skill system is fantastic. Allowing for character customization not seen in most RPG systems. Unlike most systems each character has the ability to be great right after creation, but leaving plenty of room for enhancement and growth. This guide and the Arcane book are all you really need to get started. The bestiary is also handy of course. As we play in a different world we haven't looked at the Atlas so I can't comment on it as of yet, but given the quality of these other products I recommend it if you don't have a world you want to incorporate into the system.
Once again, its a great system, enjoy it.
The one drawback I would mention, despite this being a great RPG, is the fact that the supporting books are sold separately. for example, if you want to use the Guilds and Professions of the setting (which I recommend), you need the Atlas of Estlin. The game is set up so it can be a non-magic type, but for magic you need the Arcane book, and so on. (Though the other books are good too, I'd have liked to see them all together--maybe a special edition or something? :)
Still, especially if you go the used path, its comparable in price to other RPGs, and it is very in-depth.
Anyhow, both combat gamers and those who like more subtlety in their actions wiull find a system to fit them. Combat is especially customizable. All in all, a remarkable game from these guys. Great work!
What you get here, is in fact the rules for task resolution, combat and mass combat, guide lines for a campaign and a portion of the character generation system. As a result it is essentially worthless unless you buy the additional books.
There are four books required to have a "complete game". Having the complete game will run from 64 up to 80 bucks, excluding S&H depending on who you purchase it from.
Four, soft cover, B& W books are, I'd say regardless of the system, not worth the high price tag.
Now from what i can tell, the mechanics look solid and useable, but the editing leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of info is crammed on each page, with a grey back ground making reading it a strain on the eyes.
If the book contained a full set of character creation rules, a sample of the game setting and a "sample" adventure" & better editing, I might bump the score to 3 stars.
As it is, don't bother unless you plan on buying the full set. A far better option for those interested in this game would be to go to the EPIC RPG website and buy the "Epic RPG Complete Game Manual" which does contain everything needed to play, at a lower price.
