5.0 von 5 Sternen GREAT read, but buying quintet vs individual books may not be best value for you. 29. November 2013

I read Ender's Game many years ago (at least 10-15). The ending made such an impression on me that when I saw the movie promo, I had to read it again. I am now almost thru the second book (Speaker for the Dead) and still can't put it down. Even if you don't like Sci Fi, I recommend you should read at least the first book in this series. I don't like spoilers, so I have to use cliche's. It is about "man's inhumanity to man" (even to children). What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. It's lonely at the top. How do you save humankind without losing your humanity? There's some shades of the classic "1984"...

I honestly can't imagine how a movie can capture the internal agony of the soul that Ender goes thru when each decision, each success has a terrible price.

PRICE ALERT: Do your research. I got lucky and bought the entire Kindle quintet for $22.49. I would not pay the $35 price listed now (not when you can buy the Kindle books individually for a much lower total)!!! Also, due to carpal tunnel and arthritis, I'm finding it frustrating that makes me stop reading. I now wish I'd bought the books individually, so I could get the discount for the matching Audible versions. Amazon won't recognize the complete Kindle quintet as meeting the criteria to get Audible discount. $12.99 each is terrible enough, $36 EACH is highway robbery,

5.0 von 5 Sternen WAY BETTER THAN THE MOVIE! 29. November 2013

My 12 year old daughter found this set after seeing the movie "Ender's Game" and she read them all in 2 weeks! Her pronouncement after reading them was "the movie was great, but the books were WAY BETTER!"

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love the books, make sure this is the best deal though. 25. November 2013

Ender's Game is probably my favorite book period. As I child I did not have the appreciation for the slower, more dramatic sequels. Re-reading these classics now, I realize that I have a new appreciation for the writing of Orson Scott Card.
3.0 von 5 Sternen Ender's game is great; very well put together 4. Dezember 2015

Ender's game is great; very well put together. It can be appreciated on many different levels, for many different reasons. Child soldiers, military strategy and priority, the nature of war, the role of government, parents, etc.

Speaker for the dead, Xenocide, and Children of the mind were difficult for me to read, mostly because I did not like the characters at all, and those books are very character driven. Everyone's narrative sound like it is spoken in the same voice (and it is a voice I find to be arrogant, nerdy, religious one-upmanship).
That arc has some very cool and interesting spiritual scifi elements / concepts, but I am not sure it is worth slogging through 4 books to get the idea.
Incorporating other ethnicities / nations as the basis for various planetary locations is a worthy goal, but the result was not believable. All the single nation colonies felt like someone writing about a "novelty culture" because it was interesting, rather than really fleshing it out with all the randomness of real life. Maybe that part of the narrative just hasn't aged well.

The writing flows very well. I also thought that the plot arcs were well conceived. I just didn't like the people in it.
4.0 von 5 Sternen A Must Read for Science Fiction Fans 17. Februar 2015
Von DRob - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

There were times when I was reading this, particularly during Children of the Mind, when I was in awe at the writing, when I stopped and pumped my fist in the air and said, "Yes! This is what turns science fiction into great literature!" In Children of the Mind, I finally saw true emotion that had been missing before. Ender worked so hard to keep his emotions hidden that it wasn't until he split into the Val and Peter personalities that I had a real sense of the emotion behind the character.

I didn't really care for Ender in Exile. It was the book I thought Speaker for the Dead was going to be, and I probably would have liked it more if I had read it directly after Ender's Game.

Some things I particularly liked about the Quintet:
I liked the concept of a Speaker for the Dead. Wouldn't we all like to have someone explain the truth about our lives, about our motivations, disappointments and joys?

I loved the alien life form of the piggies. Their life cycle is one of the few unique life cycles I've seen in science fiction.

I loved the Ender character, his external calm hiding his internal turmoil.

Jane as a sentient being.

Some things I didn't really like:
The Hive Queen concept. Why are insectoid aliens so often depicted as gestalt beings in science fiction?

The concept of souls fluttering around in mindspace waiting for a body.

The instantaneous transfer via Jane's mind. It smacked too much of deux ex machina.

The Demosthenes and Locke storyline. I didn't see that it added anything.

I would recommend this quintet for anybody who enjoys good science fiction. I would even say that it is a must read for any science fiction fan. I'm surprised that I have not read it before; a happenstance I attribute to the fact that I did not like Card's Alvin Maker series.

Will it become one of my favorites of science fiction? I doubt it. I might read Ender's Game again, but I doubt I would read any of the other books in the series again. They made me think a lot, but I also had to work to read them. It wasn't effortless reading. However, I am glad I read them and strongly recommend them to others.
