4.0 von 5 Sternen Useful for EM Elective 4. Oktober 2013
Von Michael J Leukam - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I picked this up for a 1 month MS4 elective in EM when I was searching for a useful handbook (something like the Pocket Medicine "Green [or red, or purple] Book") The EM "Pocket" series handbook was poorly reviewed by classmates, so I picked up "Secrets" based on Amazon reviews.

So far: it's not a useful handbook of algorithms, differentials, lab interpretation etc like the Green Book, but it is a very good text for the clinical rotation. Most clinical teaching on the EM rotation so far has focused on the "philosophy" of medical decision making and management in the ED, and this book covers those topics effectively. It covers crucial information about all the common symptoms and disorders you see in the ED, and the "pimp question" format makes it easy to remember. I've been asked similar questions as those in the book, and if I've already read the relevant material, I feel like a rock star.

Overall, this text covers a lot of useful information, is organized well, is easy to read, and fits (heavily) in a white-coat pocket for glancing through a chapter before writing a note. On the downside, it's denser than I had hoped for a 1 month rotation, and it's not useful for quickly looking up guidelines as you go like a good handbook would be. I can't comment on its usefulness for the exam yet, but as exams can vary widely from place to place, you'll have to make your own judgment about what sort of test you'll be taking. If you're looking for a good, comprehensive-enough, text for a required or elective ED rotation as a medical student, this book is a winner. If you are looking for a handbook, try one of the various websites that provide EM evidence-based algorithms.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Physician Assistant Student Approved 28. Dezember 2015
Von Joey L. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This book was great for my emergency medicine rotation. It had most of the topics on my end of rotation exam guide (including the vague objectives such as "diarrhea" and "vomiting!"). The topics it didn't have, which there were only a few, I was easily able to find elsewhere. The topics are laid out in a question and answer format which makes it easy to find exactly which parts of each topic you are looking to study. There are some good charts in here as well. This is a great supplement to other study materials for anyone in PA school (and I imagine med school as well) doing an emergency medicine rotation.

5.0 von 5 Sternen prepare to be pimped 18. August 2013
Von J. Pearl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

plenty of information to make you look like a star when getting pimped in the ED. well organized and easy to follow - though lacking some basic info (like cranial nerves and function) very good for more in depth and obscure info.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great for EM and almost any other service 13. Februar 2011
Von Matt Rutz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
What can be better than a resource that goes through undifferentiated complaints. This book is great for anyone going into EM (3rd, 4th, and interns). Use this book during your 3rd year to prep for step 2 since undifferentiated complaints that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality are what step 2 tests. Great for EM rotations (fits in white coat pockets). Most services all have emergency department consults and this book goes through how to initially approach these patients. Easy to read and gets the essential points across.
