"Stunning, riveting." --Linda Fairstein

"Tanenbaum knows this territory better than anyone." –Linda Fairstein

It was a muggy summer day when Janice Wylie and Emily Hoffert were murdered in their apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Months passed before police arrested George Whitmore, Jr., and he confessed to the crime. But his incarceration would entail a host of shocking law enforcement missteps and cover-ups. In this first insider's account, New York Times bestselling author Robert K. Tanenbaum delivers a page-turning real-life thriller about this historic case--from the brutal crime to the wrenching conviction, which forever reformed the American justice system.

"A true crime classic, brilliantly written and unfailingly riveting." --Vincent Bugliosi

"Thrilling and insightful." –Publishers Weekly

"A nonfiction murder mystery, an intriguing saga." --Kirkus Reviews

Accurately recaptures the chilling details of the career girls case of the 1960's.Pays merited accolades to the brilliant and dedicated work of two Ass't DAs in NY County who exonerated the wrongly accused man who was coerced into a false confession and convicted the real killer.

Very detailed and it "pulls no punches" with respect to issues in the criminal justice system. One has to remember this event took place almost fifty years ago and the police procedures used were the "norm" of the day. It is unfortunate that police are judged by "cases closed" and DA's are judged by convictions. The young man in the book was "low hanging fruit" so both sides won. The read is outstanding!

I think it's just a matter of perception as to whether the story is about truth and justice. I think it's how a lot of minorities are treated by the police. I don't think they are all this type and I know a lot of people who have gone to great lengths to change this situation. I have hope that people who read this story enjoy it as much as I have.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Reviews a landmark case and the real life inspiration behind Butch Katz 9. Oktober 2013

Mel Glass is a real life hero who unravels a case of police misconduct and delivers justice. Readers familiar with Tannenbaum's fiction will recognize the inspiration for DA Butch Katz's idealism and commitment to justice and integrity. It has been said that all that is necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. Good men like Mel Glass stand against evil and we need to recognize their courage.
5.0 von 5 Sternen The best and the worst of the Justice system. 26. Juni 2014

This story of the investigation and prosecution of an infamous and cruel multiple murder illustrates how overzealous investigators can manipulate the evidence and how other investigators dedication to doing justice can, through diligent and extremely thorough collection of evidence, right the scales. This is a very well written and fascinating story that I could not put down. I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend it.
