Winner of the Virginia Romance Writers of America Holt Medallion Award of Merit, Gulf Coast Romance Writers of America Silken Sands Readers' Choice STAR Award, and Heartland Romance Writers of America Show Me The Spark Award. When a duke masquerades as a privateer to track down his father's murderer, his deception results in an unplanned marriage to a young woman with secrets of her own.

A desperate young woman ... Lady Louisa Barrick will do anything to save her estate and the village that depends on it, but when she tries to use a rakish privateer in her scheme, things don’t turn out as planned.

A duke masquerading as a privateer ... Jonathan Derek Wentworth has a scheme of his own: to track down the ton-based smuggling gang responsible for his father’s death. When he’s caught in a compromising situation with Lady Louisa, he decides it’s better to marry her than to risk being ostracized by the London society whose invitations are vital to his plan. But Louisa refuses to marry him, unless he meets her terms, one of which is a month-long reprieve from consummation.

Intent on seduction, Derek doesn’t count on his unexpected jealousy wreaking havoc with his emotions, his marriage, and his masquerade. Lucy, still grieving the death of her father, wants desperately to avoid another heartbreak, but fears she may have schemed herself into a marriage with the one man destined to break her heart: a man who isn’t what he seems, who obviously can’t be trusted, and who will surely leave her the first chance he gets.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Stephie Smith was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the fifth of six girls. Early years were spent making mischief and, in general, driving her parents crazy while the family migrated between Ohio, West Virginia, and Florida. In fact, her family moved so often—18 times before Stephie finished sixth grade—that some people suspected they were running from the law. Stephie left home at 14, finished high school at 16, and enlisted in the Air Force at 18, graduating with honors from the USAF Schools of Electronics and Instrumentation. After attending several colleges and universities around the country (switching majors from Chemistry to Art to English to Psychology but never figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up), she followed her sisters to east central Florida and settled there. She remains there today writing historical romance, humorous women’s fiction, and computer how-to books. You can contact her through her website StephieSmith.com. She loves to hear from readers.

This is a well-told story which made me keep turning page after page. There are many suspenseful scenes which keep the reader wondering if all will go well. I found the manner in which Aunt Eleanor came to suspect Captain Derek Wainwright's (aka Jonathan Derek Wentworth) true identity quite humorous. The duke's investigation of the smuggling ring does not overrun the story. There are also a couple of unexpected and surprising twists near the end.

HASH(0x9ad696d8) von 5 Sternen more, more, more books, please! 15. April 2012
Von loves books - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I downloaded this book because I loved the cover. It's a nice change from the ones that have the woman in a gown with her laces undone or a couple who look like they're having sex though they're still dressed. But don't let the cover fool you. Though there aren't an overload of love scenes, the ones that are there are HOT, HOT, HOT!

I loved the humor in this book. It wasn't slapstick or witty repartee, which wears thin. It's humor about life and human traits. I don't think I've read another romance with a jealous hero because it's not an admirable trait, but this author pulls it off, mostly, I think, because of the humor. It's as though she pokes fun at the characters, but gently. It's laugh out loud funny in places. It can also make you cry. I also loved the characters--Derek and Lucy-- and the secondary characters, and I hope to see them in other books in the trilogy.

There are a lot of elements that come together, which makes for a very interesting read. The smuggling plot is totally in the background; it does not interfere with the romance. I didn't expect a lot of things that happened but can't imagine removing any of them. The Big Surprise was especially perfect, as was the epilogue, which left me with a wonderful feeling.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more of this author's books.

HASH(0x8fb1ab1c) von 5 Sternen Not Your Ordinary Historical Romance 2. Mai 2012
Von Judy Gasperini - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Young Lucy connives to ruin her reputation so that she doesn't have to marry the man her uncle has chosen and will be able to run her estate how she pleases. Her plan backfires when she flirts with a Derek, a visiting privateer, who is an undercover duke trying to discover the truth about his father's murder. Set in early 19th century England, this isn't just an ordinary historical romance, but a page turner starting with the privateer's plans, the naïvete of a young lady, their ensuing romantic relationship, and the intrigue of the smuggling ring. Author Stephie Smith seems to know how to choose just the right words so the story is fascinating to read to the end leaving you wanting more. I look forward to the next book from this promising new author.

HASH(0x8fb1a9fc) von 5 Sternen Nice quick read 30. Juni 2013

Overall, this is an interesting story with likeable lead characters.

But while the developing relationship between Lucy and Derek was engaging (and frustrating at times), I felt the storyline regarding the smugglers was a little weak. Also, the villains of the piece were easy enough to pick very early on so no surprises there.

The main characters are well developed but I would have liked to see a little more depth to some of the side characters as well.

This is definitely not a traditional Regency romance as it includes some pretty steamy bedroom scenes.

A very enjoyable Regency. Plenty of action, some suspense, humor and lots of romantic tension. The characters were interesting as was the story. If you enjoy Regencies, you'll enjoy this one.

HASH(0x8fb66a14) von 5 Sternen Some Parts Ridiculous 19. August 2012
Von Voracious Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Others have given summaries, so I'll give my thoughts. I liked some parts of the book but not others. I thought the characters were likeable, but they caused difficulties for each other and themselves by the choices they made and how they acted. I had even more problems with the plot. Here are some of them:

Lady Foxworth's insinuation that she wanted to seduce Lucy was too over the top, even though she later says it was a ploy to judge Derek's reaction.

Their wedding night didn't make sense. Lucy wore extra clothing so she wouldn't succumb to Derek's touches, but before all he had to do to arouse her was to kiss her.

How could a cook fix ham and eggs, use rotten eggs, and not know it?

I doubt if a lady in England in 1809 would have given her horses names like Kachina from the American West, even if her father had spent time with Indians as a young man. After all, the Louis and Clark Expedition took place 1804-1806 to explore the western territories. The Spanish would have had more contact with the Pueblo Indians than the English would have. If her father had spent time with the Indians in the 1700's it would have most likely been with an Eastern group.

After Derek marries Lucy, his quest to seduce her and always being foiled got old, and there's way too many misunderstandings throughout. That Derek heard Lucy talking to her horse in the barn and thought it was a lover was ridiculous. He immediately retreats, but any husband would have opened the barn door to see who it was.

Lucy would not have gone to the doctor because she was expecting, not unless there were complications. She would have had a midwife, which was mentioned at first, but then she thought about what the doctor had said.

I could have done without Lucy describing to Sara exactly what happened when she consummated her marriage. In fact the terminology and descriptions of sex was way too explicit for me throughout the book. Characters were less likeable because of their manipulations, deceit, and secrets.

The country road was newly paved? In 1809? There is no explanation of what is meant by paved.

The second perpetrator died of a gunshot wound, but where did that come from? This person had been brought down with a knife wound in the shoulder.

How did Sara end up with Jack, Derek's school friend that he'd been searching for? There is no explanation.

As you can see, there's a lot I didn't like about the novel. However, the characters are interesting, and I read to see how it would all unfold. I figured out one of the mystery criminals, but the other one came as a surprise. But, if you don't want to read a romance where the main characters' actions cause one problem after another for them, where they keep secrets and are involved in manipulations and deceit, then stay away from this one.
